Wisconsin carp shooting....We killed them!!!!!(pics)
« on: May 25, 2009, 09:40:00 PM »
Just got home from a fabulous weekend with good friends in Door County: Ron and Annee Lang. Besides carp shooting we gorged ourselves on ribs, moose steaks and homemade italian sausages. The ladies toured in the Miata while myself, Ron, my son Bryan and Kevin Bahr were in pursuit of the rare and elusive carp. Our first spot that we checked on turned out to be the honey hole, but only after we cleared the boat launch of an 18ft Ranger boat pulled by a 2 wheel drive mini van. No way he was getting out unassisted. Nothing like a boat landing for entertainment!!!
The shooting was quite easy as we never got into water deeper than a foot and a half. My shortest shot was 1 foot, this shot was common.

Thats me with Ron in the background.

Ron with an average size fish and his stringer.

Bryan doing battle.

Bryan with the barrels full. The water wasn't deep enough to float the boat out.

We had to tow the rest.

Here is Kevin, and yes that is his Paul Schaffer carp shooting bow on the pile.

Group shot.

The load ready for the compost pile. That trailer is 12 feet long.

Thanks again to Ron and Annee, as well as the Pinney"s for their great hospitality.

What a great day in the shallows!      Looks like you guys hit it just right.  Ron and Annee are pretty special folks.  I know where he got his moose steaks, but his tomatoes are gonna taste kinda fishy.   "[dntthnk]"   I wonder about Kevin sometimes.

I was just wondering what the ethics behind killing such a bunch of fish and throwing them on the compost is? I know in Australia they are destroying the ecosystem of the rivers so should be shot. I dont know nothing about this in the US. could you tell me?

To meke it clear, its not mend as an offense. I just noticed the difference between the loving-caring-usingallparts-attitude towards prey on land and the nocaring-disliking-throwingaway-attitude while bowfishing.

saumansch, Yes it does seem a bit waistefull, but as in Australia the carp is unwelcome for all the damage it does. Our state lets us shoot as many as we please as long as we remove them. We do try to descrete about it and do it away from homes and cottages. However the reality is we really have no effect on their population.

greg, thanks for the info. I understand now. It is just always hard imaginable ina country where they put them into the waters and they are very wellcome. In the netherlands they even made catch and release for carp a law. Just imagine muskies or bass as a pest and seems unimaginable, or?

kind Regards

saumensch, In many places here the carp have had a devasting impact on the local waters.  I think it is simply a result of the carp being an import they take over the ecosystem and completely destroy it.  Rooting up vegetation and muddying the water, interfering with the spawning of native fish populations, etc.

Here in the States there are many examples of animals, fish, plants, and insects that have been imported for one reason or another.  When they get here they don't fit the ecosystem with no natural predators or controls and completely disrupt what we already have.  In most cases, it has been proven time and again that man does a very poor job of trying to manipulate the environment.

In some places here in Wisconsin the carp have taken over lakes and rivers so completely that the DNR will draw down and poison the entire system and kill every fish in it, eventually restocking with native species.

Very interesting though to look at it from the perspective of someone from a country where carp are valued.  Like you said, it would sure be hard for us to imagine if you had a similar problem with muskie or bass.

I've been out shooting fish and had the DNR and their biologist tell us to kill every one of those trashfish.

Must be nice to not have to worry about gators and snakes.
