How does one determine if a single bevel broadhead is Left-Bevel or Right? Please advise...

Lay the head down flat on a table with the point away from you. If the edge is on the left it is a left bevel.

Do you mean the ground edge will be exposed on the left side of the head?

Now that is opposite from what the guys at A&H told me today. They said that if you pick up the head with the tip pointing away from you, holding the blade vertical and look at the back of the blade the bevel will either be on the right for right and left for left...so who's right now that I am more confused...

Right bevel shown. Left bevel will be on the opposite side.

This is a Grizzly 160 grain and all Grizzly's from the factory are right bevel.

So does that broadhead rotate clockwise or counter-clockwise on impact? To me with the greater surface area of the grind as pictured I would think the head would rotate counter-clockwise or left thus negating the right wing fletch as required by Dr. Ashby...

Left wing bevels require left wing fletch and vice versa.

I just read Ashby's article on single bevel and I think A&H have their bevels mixed up. The rotation of the broadhead is towards the non-bevel side if I read it correctly. Thanks for the help guys...I think I am going to call Dan on Monday and talk with him a bit.

Daniel,

Yes, it does rotate away from the bevel, so in the head shown (right bevel) it will rotate clockwise. I have a right, single bevel knife in my kitchen and when I cut something firm with it, the blade cut wants to go away from the bevel.

Look at it this way, as the head is being pushed into something, the pressure is exerted on the bevel. So depending upon the broadhead, it will rotate clockwise (right bevel) or counter-clockwise (left bevel).

i've always hand sharpened my knives and twin blade broadheads and i can get a great edge, but i gotta put a word in about the kme sharpening system - it's just *perfect*.

i use the kme knife sharpener for both knives and broadheads. super easy and fast, the perfect angle every time - even on knives and broadheads with very curved blades.

man, i didn't know what i was missing all these years. highly recommended. there just ain't no guessing with a kme and blades come out *razor* sharp every time.

Thanks for all the help guys...I am definitly going to check into the KME system. Do they have diamond hones or just the stones? Are the hones/stones large enough to fit Grizzlies or Abowyers on all the way along the length of the blade or does it take moving the broadhead in the vise?

KME has both stones and diamond hones in kits. Give them a call and you will learn all about their products and how they work. Great guy to deal with and if you have any trouble at all he'll even walk you through it on the phone till you get it right!

stones or diamonds, take yer pick. both will get the job done. diamonds work faster, but cost more.

i've sharpened old bear razor heads, ace standards, zwicky eskimo ... as well as knives with 2" to 11" blades, all curved. no problem and once the blade is locked in you never take it out, but you will rotate the blade on the jig. you need to see the vid and get the scoop straight from ron ...

Wow that looks like a great system! On the single bevel heads does one just sharpen the factory beveled side or do you lightly touch the non-bevel side to take off the curl if there even is one?

Just to clarify, the definition that Spanky gave you and the one you got from Abowyer both say the same thing. Spanky said point it away from you flat; Abowyer said point it up. Same difference. If it's beveled on the right side it's a right bevel. If it's beveled on the left side it's a left bevel.
