Bear Greenies VS Abowyer Brown Bears?
« on: June 10, 2009, 11:13:00 PM »
Loooking for some thoughts, I hunt whitetails, NY VT OH, have not killed one yet with trad gear. Will be using a Risen Son [Elburg] longbow, 54lbs@31, 32" long 2018. What would be the better head, the old Bear Razorheads [I have some] or the sinle bevel Abowyer Brown Bear, ia m getting some. Opinions?

You draw 31" on a 32" bow? Never saw a 32" bow except for kids.

He is drawing a 32" 2018 arrow according to his post. Where do you see a 32" bow?

I have been using the Abowyers alot but the last hog I killed was with a old Razorhead. I was at my parents farm didn't plan on hunting that evening was just shooting my bow for fun and thought I should go try to get a hog.I had no broadheads with me so I dug out some of my dads old razorheads sharpened them on a stone and killed a nice 150lb sow at 25 yards that evening. 54lb@27 recurve carbon arrows in one side out the other dead in 45 yards.

The ABowyers are the latest and greatest for sure; but nothing wrong with an old Bear head on whitetail deer.

The latest Bjorn, but I wouldn't sign-off on the "greatest" yet.       :saywhat:      The Bear Razorhead has killed large and small animals around the world, from chipmunks to elephant, and has stood the test of time.  They also sharpen easily to shaving edge.
Maybe you have guessed by now that I have used them since dirt was invented...and still do.

The answer is use the one you can get the sharpest.

my opinion I would go with the Abowyers I just got some myself and they are awesome...although a little spendy.  Good luck!

Abowyers I'm sure are a good head....but in reality aren't gonna do anything that the tried and true Bear will do.....if that's what you have, sharpen them up, and put'um thru the ribs....

Well, it seems everyone is for the Bears, but what about the advantage the Abowyers may have if the shot hits bone? Doesnt  that possibility make going to the single bevel abowyer a step ahead?

Well elbow everyone here will tell you thats not a problem and a recent thread called "Best Penetrating Broadhead" could answer some of those questions for you.  I am one of the few lumped in with Dr. Ashby and a few others who think the advantages of the single bevel are undeniable but I know from past experience that my opinion will be met with heavy opposition.  I would suggest reading the Ashby reports and making the determination for yourself.  Categorically the single bevel WILL penetrate better through bone but then again as Terry and Curt have demonstrated with great images in the post I mentioned above if you hit shoulder blade from the ground level you will not be hitting vitals anyway.

The only problem I see here is that the Bear is 125 grains with bleeder and the Brown Bear is 175.

I think the Abowyers are much harder steel making it a very strong and durable broadhead. I think the single bevel Abowyer would be a better head. m2c

As stated both will do fine if shot placement is true. If we were talking elk then I'd have to say go with the Abowyer.

snag,  I see the Razorhead as a head for any game.   That head has taken elephant, cape buffalo, and myriad other ultra-big game.  The ease of sharpening is also a plus.  Whatever you use, it needs to be sharp and you need to be able to sharpen them properly.

Either way you can't go wrong just which ever one catches your eye. Be sure it is SHARP.

Shot both, the abowyer  is much stronger in my opinion,  shot the abowyer through my 5/4 decking- no problem with aboywer- the bear didn't penetrate maybe half way and  the tip was hurting.
