Finding new private ground.
« on: June 13, 2009, 09:51:00 AM »
Me and my brother have been driving around and asking for permision to bow hunt and have been doing surprisingly well.  So make sure you get out now and get some new spots before the other guys beat you to it.  You never know when you will lose one, my friend just sold his place and is moving to Texas but no worries I got 4 new ones.  Don't worry about the rejection just ask.  Ask 5 and you might get 1 or 2. Sometimes you are just in an area where some have had bad experiences, I just go 5 miles down the road and those people may be Ok with it.  Good luck

there's so many houses in the county anymore, it's hard to tell who owns acerage and who just owns an arce or two.  i'd imagine i'd have to knock on ten doors just to find a landowner.  how do you know who owns what?  been lucky or do you have a county plot book?

Farmers around here have had bad experiences with hunters and won't let you hunt OR they have found value in leasing out land. Good thing for all the state land around me or else I'd be shooting foam all year.
Good luck in your search.
Just one more step please!

We just put on some nice clothes and wash the car and start driving.  We pull up and introduce ourselves and ask if they have a place we could bowhunt a few times.  We don't pound places anyway just scout and hunt give it a little break and come back.  A Plat map is very handy and costs around 20 bucks.  Then you will have a good idea about boundries and how much land you are talking about.  I will get a new map before we go  back that away we don't have so many questions and become a pain.  Go in the evening preferably on friday or the weekend when the work is done and they are in a good mood. Don't bother farmers working on tractors and such.

It depends where you are I realize some areas have access cut because of leasing.  Most people around here are really nice and if they aint or they say no just say thank you for your time and ride on.  Usually around here one or two people will have some problems with a group of guys and tell there close neighbors that is why I say just try it 10 miles down the road.  I run into places that are leased but you usually find out pretty fast and move on.  I can usually tell by the car in the drive way how it will go.  Older people are more likely to let us go.  I don't have a problem with rejection because the rewards are awesome when they say yes.

My cousin is always complaining about not having any good hunting spots but in his case he will just not ask anyone.  I gaurantee I could go and find 4 places to hunt within 30 minutes of his house in 1 maybe 2 evenings.  Arwin I am not saying this is the case with you just with him.  I just posted this to maybe boost some courage and help a few guys get out there.

i've got a small place now, but i have to deal with two or so others.  the farm has produced for me, 7 deer in the last two seasons (all does and a bb), but i'm always having to contend with the others, which is just frusterating.  i've been looking for a lease.  even when i find something, it just seems like more than i want to pay and/or just can't justify dropping that kind of coin.

yeah but i've only seen a few bucks (I'm a rack hunter as much as i am a meat hunter)...none of these have been trad kills by the way (wheel bow). the owner's boy loves to drive the dang rubber of his gator.  drive me nuts but heck, it's their land not mine. now he's got this plan to cut a big path right through the middle of the woods.....great.

I just returned from a trip to Kansas and have 3 places to hunt there now.  Don't know when or if I will even hunt there.

Just one more thing you got to make sure you say BOW HUNTING.  If you rifle hunt too maybe once you get your foot in the door and they see you are respectful you can ask for that later.
