any knapping material around san francisco area??
« on: June 23, 2009, 01:13:00 PM »
i find myself stuck in a san fran apartment visiting my brother-in-law for nearly 2 weeks before we fly out to oz.
big cities-    :scared:

i went and visited 'northerncaliforniahunter' and he gave me a chunk of obsidian, saying that there was plenty around.

is there any knapping material to be found within the san fran region? we are taking a drive to yosemite later on the weekend. any on the road out that way.

where can i find some??    :help:

Clint, there's plenty of glass, but that's pretty much it.  I've heard rumors of tiny sources of mediocre stone, but from what I know they aren't worth your time.  Get some 1/2" window glass (non-tempered) when you get back to OZ.  Great stuff to learn on!

By the way, I mailed a box today with a Queensland address on it...      :wavey:

There is some obsidian at Davis Creek But I heard that the authorities are not allowing collection there anymore. Getting to be too many of us knappers. I used to know were Davis Creek was exactly but I let it slip. I just know it is in northern CAL somewhere.

Heading east from San Francisco into Yosemite you'll be passing through "gold country". After you make it through the central valley and are working your way through the foothills (rolling grass and oaks) you'll be near a plethera of knappable stone. There will be rest places near rivers and that's where you'll want to poke around. In the high sierras you'll find lots of granite but I'm not sure about flint.

The Clear Lake area about an hour and a half North of SF has a ton of obsidian laying around altho you already have some. The gold country area is very interesting especially if you get off the highways and explore a bit.  Fun towns are Hornitos ("little oven", aptly named in the summer), La Grange which was a big hydraulic mining site with enormous rock piles, and Columbia a preserved, restored mining town. Off topic but if you like old mining towns a visit to Bodie on the CA/NV border would be great and give you a different view of CA. Bodie is a
day trip from Yosemite and depending how you go the other towns are not too far out of the way. If you do go to Bodie make sure to find out if the roads are open.

Hey ozy if you have your bow with you there is a little city just west of San Fran called Pacifica, the San Francisco Archers Range is there and one of the best places to shoot in the state. If you get a chance stop by there and shoot the course.  www.sfarchers.com  also about 40 miles south in Saratoga is another very nice range.  www.bhuarchers.org

Both these clubs have high numbers of trad shooters and are great people
