what knot do you tie when making an endless loop string?
« on: June 24, 2009, 03:29:00 PM »
what knot do you tie after laying out the strands around the jig posts?  i've been using a reef knot with the tag end doing a hitch on the standing part just to lock it. no failures but i'm wondering if others use a knot that might be better and/or less bulky. the less bulky the easier and neater it is to serve over later.

Ya i dont know much about endless strings but i would assume the tag ends end up under the serving in one of the loops, just a guess on my part.

Rob's how-to is correct; there is no knot required on an endless string. Both tag ends are secured by the loop serving.

i've made mine so far by tying knots. next time i'm going to tie off on the outer post, run all my strands then on the last strand run it round the outer post and tie off on the inner post. then turn the jig to 90 degrees and serve the loop as normal. that loop will have one more strand in it than the other loop.
clear as mud??
making an endless just got even easier.

I think Rob's tutioral is in the how to section here. There is no knot tieing expect of course to a end post to start off. oxy if you follow his instructions theres a bolt he secures his final wrap on. The advantage here is you can keep the strings the same tension of all the others rather than tieing off on the opposite end post and risk having a loose tension on the final wrap.

It's pretty easy to add that to your jig if you don't already have it. If your cross arm is made of wood, just drill a hole and screw in the 1/2 lag bolt - 1/2 quarter inch machine screw (it's like the ones that are used to bolt down a toilet).

I got my jig built tonight, but a bout with the stomach flu last night has me about done in. I don't know if I'll get a string made tonight or not.    :(
