Well sorry for the delay. Had a really good day on the water. When I arrived at the landing I could see the Rays doing some of there spawning activities. Man was I pumped. I unhooked the tie downs installed the boat plug and snap it broke. No problem I went to my truck go into the box and my spare is no where to be found. I ask my nephew if he had seen it he said "Oh yeah I put that in my Jon boat back at home on the pond".So I unhhook the trailer drive back to the bait shop buy two more plugs. By now the sun is peeking over the horizon . So its back to the dock install the plug and get the boat in water. By now it's light and every other boater ha srun out the cove spoiling the activities there. So it's off and three miles down the bay to the Base Ball Diamond. The little flat has the shape of a Base Ball field hence the name. When we arrive I see the tell tale wings in attention. For those who have not witnessed the spawning of Rays. They look as if they are two sharks swimming side by side.So we try and sneak into to the action as quiet as possible. I put my nephew on the platform and gets quite a few shots to no avail. Actually hit one and the arrow pulled out while trying to retreive it. He was depressed to say the least. we do a couple drifts at the Diamond and get some shooting. The rays are deep and tough to see in the cloudy waters. We then have a Crab fisherman come in and set a line through the gut of the Diamond, So we take a run about seven miles up the bay to a place called Turtle cove and the water is getting a little bit more choppy increasing the difficulty. And the activities of the Rays are deminishing. I find that early June is the best for Rays in this area so things are slowing down. We drift the cove a few times a few times and things are really slow. My main concentration was to get my nephew some shooting and have some fun. On the last drift I let my nephew take the helm and he executes it perfectly. I guess the practice in the Pond helps his seamanship. I see a couple rays but just to far.I turn to my nephew to see if he was ready to call it a day. When he blurts out"Uncle Ed right behind you" I swing in a fluid motion to catch the Ray begining to descend to deeper water. I reach anchor and the fiberglass missle has been launched, punching the Ray near center. The float shoots from its mount and goes screaming across the cove. When it comes to a halt we cruise in to retreive our trophy. I reach down grab the float and things seem to be lifeless. I get the Ray to the surface and it was finished. Usually a follow up shot or shots are necessary. Not a monster but still a trophy and a fitting end to a tough day. I'll post pics later. Had a great day with my hunting/fishing buddy. Yeah the bounty of Rays could have been greater but the final results were awesome. Seeing a child reaching out trying to mature into adulthood is a frighteneing time while still making you feel proud of who they are becoming. The little guy in my Avatar is my nephew who will be fourteen years old in two weeks. Time flies so make sure every moment spent, is a moment that will make an impact.Hope you all enjoyed. Big Ed
