New string length

Been a while since I have posted.
Anyway I broke a string the other day and I can't remember what length to order for a 60 in recurve.
Is it a 57 or 56in string?
I wasd thinkin 3in shorter than AMO, but one reference said 4in shorter.

Generally, 4" shorter for a recurve and 3" shorter for a longbow. So, you need a 56" actual length string for a 60" AMO length recurve.

Robert, depends on the make, a black widow for example, is 3" and bob lee is around 4". Depends on the design. Good shootin, Steve

My favorite recurve requires 3 inches less and my top longbow requires 4 ("D" shape when strung) so I generally measure the string the bow came with-that's usually the string length you can trust!     :D

imho, what string length to use depends on lotsa things and the last thing to be concerned about is the 'amo standard' - it's just a ball park guideline at best.

the type of string fiber used and whether the bow string is twisted (flemish) or spun (endless) dictates the working length when braced and after getting 'broken in'.  

what string length you'll need depends on the brace height yer shootin' for.  this'll all take a bit of trial and error.

Call the manufacturer and ask him what he recommends. This should eliminate the guessing.

I agree, going with the AMO length written on your bow only gets you in the ball park.  If I give a string maker that number I usually end up with a string much too long after it stretches in.
You can twist them to shorten them back up, but it often requires too much twisting where the string starts kinking up or just real tight twists.
