Arizona Javelina Hunting Near Phoenix
« on: July 21, 2009, 12:43:00 AM »
Hi There,

My brother in law moved to Phoenix, Arizona last year.  The wife and I are planning to visit him during the Javelina Archery season in January.  I am hoping someone can help me with info on any unit within two hours of Phoenix that have good Javelina numbers and public access.  I have been doing some research and the hunting licenses and tags are really reasonable for out of state hunters.  I figure we will run down for two weeks.  We will be driving down from Vancouver, Washington which leaves a lot of options for hunting on the way south thru Arizona.

North of Phoenix in units 19a, 21,22, or 23 are good. Southeast units 37a or b also good. 18b is another one with good numbers.

Clay, Arizona is one of those states that is not exactly non-resident friendly.  I've experienced different results than your apparent first impression with Arizona. Don't get me wrong, it's a great place to hunt, but administratively it's tough on non-residents.  By that I mean the fees required to antie-up and the draw odds.  Closely watch your draw submission deadlines for Javelina. As I recall the deadline is October for the January hunt but check with AZ DFG. Those tags are no longer over the counter tags. If you don't draw consider contacting the several Indian reservations that reside within the state, as they offer hunts on their soveriegn lands also that are independent of any hunt opportunity the State of Arizona offers.

Hunting Javies are a lot of fun and well worth the effort.  They are in constant motion

this year there were plenty of tags leftover on a first come first serve basis for javelina. Don't forget deer is over the counter for the month of January. And just in case you don't feel like archery anymore bring a shotgun because quail will still be open. December and January are my favorite months to be in the field.

The San Carlos Apache Reservation has good javelina numbers. You might take a look in that direction. Although I snowbirded in Arizona last winter, I found that Texas was much simpler for an out of stater to hunt, although in Texas, trespass fees are inevitable. The Lone Star State has virtually no public land.

Hey gang the info so far has been great.  I have looked into the San Carlos Reservation and plan to hunt there and on state lands if possible.

WDP, Were there extra tags for all units or just a few?  I plan to apply for a draw for the wife and I, then hope for over the counter tags if we don't get drawn.

The units right next to the metro areas were taken but all the others had plenty. I actually screwed up on the first draw and still got to hunt the unit I wanted. Don't hesitate to ask for help if you get a couple of tags. I would be gald to help if I can.

Make darn sure where you are hunting! End up on Indian Reservation Property and they can take everything you have... truck, bow, binocs, everything!
