A day with Ted Fry
« on: July 21, 2009, 04:02:00 AM »
After lucking out and finding Raptor Archery, I walk in the front door and see a fella sanding a bow i ask you Ted?? No I'm Bjorn,, I think wow that's cool. Then i look around and there are bows hanging and sitting everywhere,, So i look around a little more, And it is just like being in a live catalog,I couldn't believe my eyes, I was surrounded by just about everything a person could use for traditional archery..Bout that time someone comes through the back door, Bjorn says that's Ted.. So we shake and get to talking, Then he takes me upstairs and there is old bows and arrows quivers and very old archery tackle everywhere.. Ted takes the time to tell me about all this, And there was no way i could digest all he was telling me,,All i knew for sure is that i was surrounded buy hundreds of pieces of some very important archery history and i felt very privileged to be there and to get a chance to handle some of it. It was plain to see that Ted had done his home work and spent alot of time doing research..
So we go down stairs and i ask him if he would look at my gear , No problem he says,, Well in about 5 minutes of tweaking this and moving that he said grab some arrows and lets go out back and shoot. I get some arrows and head out back he took one look at my arrows and said put em away,, then he went in and a couple minutes later came back with a couple of arrows he made, try these he said, Bingo!!!! my arrows are flying perfect.. Then he took the time to show me what he had done to my bow and why he done it.. Then went on to tell me what i needed to do to get my arrows whipped into shape so they would work with my bow..
I was so relieved to know that my gear was tuned properly going into this clinic. I can't thank Ted enough it boosted my confidence and helped me get the most i could out of Rods class..
I highly recomend to anybody that gets anywhere near Hood river to go and check out Teds shop and museum,, you won't be disappointed..
Thanks Ted and Lois for your great hospitality..

Runamuk is correct about Ted's knowledge of archery history and his passion for the sport.  The kindness and generosity displayed by Ted and his family was much appreciated by all.

BTW Tyler, we all loved that salmon and halibut you brought and cooked. YUM!  Your enthusiasm and can-do/will-do attitude was impressive.

Also, give Daisy another pat on the head for me.

Ted's a great guy and I'm proud to call him friend.

Someday maybe he will show you his deadly stalking technique....he can blend into the bushes like nobody's business.

JC should I post a picture of what you were doing just before we got to that shade tree?   :bigsmyl:
But any time you want to go hunting and have me show you how to perfect that technique just holler, you are welcome in my camp any time brother.
Runamuk, I really enjoyed seeing your transformation and look forward to hearing that Tarzan yell all the way from ID when you connect.

I use that stalking method, but in cactus country I take a $5 folding camp chair and snore them in from a sitting position. Hogs and javies are particularly fond of a loud snore, deer seem to prefer the softer tones.

Ted is good company, afield or in town.

Well I found the picture , upon closer examination I decided to not post it. If you can imagine JC  with his pants down around his ankles pulling cactus spines from , well you get the idea , I dont want to scare any youngsters that may be here with us on Trad Gang.
So your safe for now brother.
Shaun, bears dont seem to care if its soft or load , just that you are pretty steady, no pause or stutters.

Ted, it's happened to me during the rut.  I shot a deer in self defense that I'm sure honed in on my snoring.  Fortunately the leaves were dry and he woke me up while approaching me at a very fast pace.  And  fortunately I had a Rem 740 in '06 laying across my chest instead of a bow.  I shot him at 10 yards.  He was intent on doing harm I'm sure  :bigsmyl:  Van

I spent many a day with Ted Fry, and his family. First time I went up he was sitting down for lunch, picked his draw knife up, used it to cut his sandwich in half and gave half to me. He did it in such a way and so naturally that it expressed his lifestyle, whats mine is yours. Oh, don't believe that snoring in game. If that really worked I would have surpased Smilin Chuck Adams many years ago.
