How many tradgangers going to NM after elk?
« on: July 29, 2009, 08:43:00 PM »
I finally got lucky and drew a NM tag for unit 13 for the first 10 days of Sept. Was wondering how many other tradgang members were headed to NM after elk. My first two choices were for unit 36, but very happy with getting drawn for my third choice.

I have put in for a tag in NM for 9yrs without any luck.  I have a friend with some property outside of Pie Town, NM. I think that is to the east of units 15, 16's. I have never been there. Is that a good area for elk?  Does NM give out landowner tags? If so, how many acres do you have to own to qualify for a tag?  Thanks, David

They do have small contributing landowner tags, but not familiar with how many acres you have to own to apply. I checked on a few landowner tags, but they go for a premium price.

I hunted down there about ten years ago. Things are always changing, especially in NM. Plan on finding elk where you wouldn't expect to find elk. Most of the country is not steep or high and the elk can and probably will be anywhere. You will see some big bulls unless things have taken a turn for the worse. Good luck and have fun.

I drew 15, 1st hunt.

Never hunted 13, just 6A,9,16A, 16B, 16D, 50 and 52. Plenty of steep and not so steep country in all of the area's. All are fairly high altitude if you're not used to it.

Unit 9 landowner cow tags are readily available for $350.00, ES  are $700 - $1000.
16's and 15 are 3-4k just for the tag.
