err...Houston we have a problem...copy?
« on: July 30, 2009, 08:49:00 PM »
out shooting when I got home from work...testing out this new batch of carbonwoons I just made up over the weekend.  wanted to see them fly in the daylight to make sure all was well....4 shots into the kill of the mckensie on my third round...and WHAMO!

this is....er...sob, WAS....the bow I've taken my last 2 deer with, and shot pretty much exclusively for the last 3 years....

custom made by a friend.  56 @ 28...called Red Thunder.

any one want a 4 piece takedown?     :bigsmyl:

there was a strip of grey actionwood through the middle of the riser...and came out to the surface right at the pivot.  from the looks of the ripples in it, I guess it failed in compression?  I'll try to get some closeups...

I'm very LUCKY I guess....the only thing that actually hit me was my string hand....I had a quiver full of shaving sharp woodsmans in there...and somehow they all stayed in the hood foam!

there were probably thousands of shots thru her by me and my bowyer friend....so..I guess it was her time...

Not good, not good at all!
Glad you are okay.
Perhaps you can glue the riser back together and have your friend that made it use it as a template to make another riser in time for the season to start.
Just a thought.

kenny    Osage and Padauk if memory serves me....

thanks for all the support guys!   :)    I took it surprisingly well when it happened.

I emailed my bud to give him the bad news...and he already offered to loan me a bow, and make a new riser.....

the loan I accepted.    the new riser...I told him he does   NOT  owe me.  the bow has had thousands of shots through it (he and his dad used the bow for years before I bought it off him), and I I only paid 'materials' cost anyway.  I am Happy that I was able to take it afield and harvest some beautiful -n- tasty animals with it.   the fact that he and his father harvested with it before me, and that he was there, hunting with me when I took the first doe with it is more than enough!

That hurts to look at!

Marc, I have a line on a few pieces of private property in Zone 11 that haven't been hunted in 15yrs or so and are crawling with deer... interested?  ;)

Glad you are alright - shame about the bow but easier to replace than you being injured!

PS Guys.....I think that fact that I had a fairly-solidly mounted bow quiver on there kinda saved my bacon!   it basically had to rip all 4 arrows out of the clips AND fletching cover  to direct the energy at my face....

by the time it did that I think 'most' of the engery had dissipated.   also the inner tube I had on the handle ripped 3/4 of the way around but the last 1/4 held the 2 pieces together.

At least she went out doin' what she was always ment to do. You could have triped and fallen on it, THAT would have reeeeeally sucked. Glad you are well.

(sorry if your bow is not "female", i've always just thought of any bow as a female, much like many think of their vehicle that same way.)
Its all Gary Paulsen's fault, he got me dreaming about a bent stick and string.

My sentiments exactly Rick!   and she was putting them in the 10ring to boot!     :D

going to go out and shoot those shafts with my longbow to see how they fly....but I'm heading up to my friends place to pickup another loaner curve later today.

It's not all lost, as long as the limbs are good have a new riser built.
