I drew a New Hampshire Moose Tag!
« on: August 08, 2009, 09:12:00 AM »
I was just notified that I drew a NH moose tag. I was non-resident alternate number 5. I got an any sex tag in WMU G which is northeast of Lebanon.

I live in RI and hoping somebody can help me narrow down the odds....Maybe you know the area etc....

I am doing my homework, contacting area bio and getting topos etc.. I plan on scouting but it would be good to find somebody who knows the area..

Thanks

Steve

There is some beautiful land in New Hampshire.  Must be exciting to hunt moose.  Not many moose down here in the Carolinas.  Good luck.

Good luck Steve!!! Very cool to draw a moose tag. I hope you get some good info.
To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.

Hi Steve,
Congrats !   was lucky enough to draw in Vermont and I know what you mean about finding all the information you can.  Stay on the biologist source try the foresters as well.  Find all the places to camp and the state work force may even turn you on to folks who have camps in the area you drew that perhaps you can stay at, that is what happened with me and I am very thankful to the En-con folks for all the help.  Good luck and I hope the big one presents it's self, Joe

Congratulations Steve.  I drew an either-sex tag in unit B1 several years ago.  I don't know your unit but I can offer 3 tips:

1.  Most NRs attend the mandatory moose hunting seminar right before the season opens, but I picked one in mid september and made it a long weekend, spending 1/2 day at the seminar (take your maps and make sure to talk with the main moose biologist, she was very helpful) and the rest of the long weekend driving the roads in my unit, doing some hiking, etc.  I found an old logging raod during that trip which I eventually used during the season to access the area where I killed my bull.  I also saw a nice bull chasing a cow.

2.  Most moose you see before the season will be in the lower country, bogs, ponds, etc. but during the actual season, most of the moose are up in or very near the clearcuts that are 4-6 years old.  I wasted the first 2 days of my hunt looking at old sign in the swamps and bogs where I had seen that big bull chasing a cow in September, but found moose once I moved up into the clearcuts.

3.  The success photos on the game and fish web site list the units where the moose were killed, and the lists of successful hunters (with their home towns/states) are available - it shouldn't be too hard to look over these 2 items for the last 4-5 years and then contact the lucky hunters from your unit.  My guess is that the NRs would be more likely to provide info on where to hunt, since they probably don't expect to return any time soon.

Good hunting and please remember us here after your hunt - we like photos and hunt stories....

I know a little bit about that area.  Email me and I'll tell you what I know.  I got picked this year as well, in A2.  I use to hunt in Danbury, NH, which is right on the border of I2 and G.

congrats stephen.  I applied for the first time last year, and this year I knew I would have the vacation time cause we had a vacation to italy already planned, so I just put in for the points.

so I can't offer any useful info.  if you run into any trouble, let me know....I'm in central MA.
