Trading T/D Silvertip limbs?
« on: August 17, 2009, 03:09:00 PM »
I see a lot of folks selling limbs and trading limbs on a few forums.

How well can you expect these to fit your current riser?

Never heard anyone say.

Pretty interested in this myself, as applies to Silvertips.

Rumor has it that the Schafer are CNC'd. Haven't been able to confirm. A friend of mine bought a used T/D that was built around 2000-01 and then picked up a heavier set of limbs last year. They fit like a glove. Only one way to make that happen. Doesn't matter to me if they are CNC'd, Schafers will always be one of the best bows a person can buy.

I hope that isn't scaring people off this thread!  I don't know the answer, but if they are, all the better as far as I'm concerned.  If they're not, then Dave's a miracle worker!  Either way, they're great bows.

I'm probably going to have to get some lighter limbs for mine at some point, so I wondered if I'd have to send my riser to get 'fitted'...  Then again, my bow was made in 2001, so even if they are CNC'd now, they may not have been when it was made.  I guess this would be a good time to call and ask, considering they've got my bow there re-finishing it.

Guys, I talked to Beth late last week about whether or not my riser would have to be fitted for new limbs.  Now, my riser was made in 2001, and I didn't think to ask about a newer one, but the answer is yes, if you want a perfect fit.  I should have asked if the same applied to a newer one, but we got to talking about a set of limbs they had there, and it just slipped my mind.

Bowyers get consistent limb bolt and alignment holes by using jigs.  Likewise, they use jigs to perform the major riser shaping.  They don't need a CNC machine to do it.  Unless the bowyer changes the design, the limbs will be interchangeable, though there might be very minor cosmetic differences.

i got a new set of limbs for my 2004 recurve and they had to be re-fitted to the riser. every once in a while i would imagine  a set of limbs would be a perfect match for more than one riser but usually there would have to be a minor fitting by dave.

i do know that limbs for the 3pc longbow will not have to be re-fitted to any of the risers and the limbs will be interchangable.

as for the CNC, i don't know. i personally don't care one way or the other. great bows either way!

An segment of an email response from Beth W. to a similar question I had:

"Dave fits limbs to existing risers all the time so that's not a problem. It's kind of like a puzzle, so long as we are factoring all components in while building it should all end up fitting fine."  B.W.

As my good buddy Orion says above, there may be slight differences, but Dave can take care of these, if you are willing to send your riser in for fitting the limbs to it.

Dave and Beth are super easy to work with and really decent people...that keeps me coming back!

Kris
