"Ambushed" a Squirrel
« on: August 23, 2009, 08:03:00 PM »
A few years ago, I made a bow for the TBJ Ambush Bow Contest.  It took 3rd place but I never hunted with it much.  But this year, I decided it was time to kill something with it.  I took it this morning on a deer scouting and squirrel hunting trip.  This was on some public land in Southern Indiana that I did not know too well so I was planning on moving fast and if I got lucky on a squirrel, so be it.  If not, well I was scouting then.

I covered most of the ground I wanted by around 10:00 am so I slowed way down and eventually heard a squirrel in a tree.  He was about 50 yards away and 40 feet up in a tree.  I was able to sneak up a creek bed and close the distance to about 15 yards.  As I watched him on the edge of the limb highlighted below, I was pretty sure most of his body was covered by the limb.

I watched for a while hoping he'd move but he just sat there munching on a nut.  Finally, I got my binoculars out and saw that what I thought was limb was actually squirrel and I had a shot.  I focused as hard as possible and let fly.  I was almost shocked when I saw him fall from the tree impaled by my arrow.  He hit hard and I scrambled up the bank.  This is how I found him.

So I finally blooded the Ambush Bow with what was probably my best archery hunting shot ever.

It's a 58", bendy handled osage selfbow; 60# at 28".  I painted it camo.  I used a cedar arrow with a Ribtek 190 on the end.

Nice Shot, but I think you are very lucky as it is common knowledge here on the Gang that a Ribtek 190 is a little on the small side for squirrels.

Great shot!!  Isn't it amazing how hard you can hit those little suckers and they just keep going.  Joe

Thanks folks.  Nice to have someone else patting me on the back.  My shoulder was getting sore just doing it myself  :)

I've shot a bunch of squirrels with Ribbie 190s since that's about all I have on the end of my arrows.  I'm usually very hesitant now to shoot up since I can't find them stateside unless I'm willing to pay premium prices.  Which, of course, I am not.  I think I'm down to 5 or fewer.
