Fall deer plot
«
on:
August 26, 2009, 04:30:00 AM »
Since I had a very busy spring and summer, I wasn't able to plant my usual food plot this year. With deer season coming faster then I imagined (which there is nothing wrong with that!), I would like to plant a fall food plot, which I have never done.
I was wondering if you guys could tell me what you have had or didn't have success with. What did you guys plant, and how? Thanks.
Jack

do a search online for whitetail insitute. they are the makers of whitetail imperial clover. the clover won't do you any good this late but they have a fall product I can't remember. I know they have some good products cause we use the clover and minerals they sell

Buck Forage Oats w/ Alfagraze alfalfa mix.The oats come up fast and the deer will graze it andit will protect your seedling alfalfa from being over grazed .Plus the deer will really hit the oats later in the season when alot of there deit has played out. Then next season you have a established alfalfa plot and we take that a stept further by planting fall appletrees in our alfalfa plot. You get 5+ years of alfalfa to hunt and when those appletrees produce. You can't keep them out of there.

I like Buck Forage oats. Seem to be easy to grow and our deer really like them. Sprayed Round-up, waited a week, put down lime and fertilizer, rake or disc if you can. Spread your seed just before a rain if possible. We rolled over ours to improve contact with the ground and had good success. Good luck.

You may be getting a little late in Michigan. The Whitetail institute has a product called winter greens which is a late season planting of Burassica's. We use it every year, plant around the August 1st time frame. It turns very sweet after the first couple of frosts and stays green well into the snows. It is an annual where you have to plant every year but we see about double the deer we do out of our perennials which are mostly clovers.
We experiment with about six plots, planting different annuals and then setup our cameras on them and see which get hit the heaviest, so far winter greens has been overwhelmingly the best.
Do the online search as stiks-stings said and see what they say.
