preferred string material?
«
on:
August 26, 2009, 05:04:00 AM »
What are some of your favorite (for both longbow and recurve) string materials and why?
I am looking for a string material that is both quiet and performs well with minimal string creep.
I was shooting FF but too noisy, I switched to B50 and like it but too much string creep.
Looking for the best of both worlds.
Thanks Kris

I stick with B50 and have the last 20 years, I know it is slower and creeps for a while. BUT it is quite , that is one of the main reasons I started shooting a recurve years ago. My Schafer is quite as a owl flying thru the night air.

I like D97. I have it on my Beeler longbow and it's great. I leave it strung all the time and it isn't stretching any more since the initial break-in stretch. It's quiet also. I don't even use string silencers on it.

Dynaflight '97 for me. Not so much for any added speed, but for durability and lack of stretch/creep. Next choice is 8125.

i'll echo chad's choice, 'cept i use the low wax dyneema'02 version since my strings are endless. in the long run, only you can decide what fiber will work best with what bow, there are no short cuts and opinions of others are just that. be mindful if the bow isn't rated for modern string fiber you need to stick with dacron.

I will say they are all good materials and the quality of construction of both is just as important. A well made string of dacron will out preform a poorly one of the newer performing materials! Endless or Flemish, period.
Also proper maintenance of both, remember no matter which string. Dacron served alot of archers for many years, tournaments and animals taken! I choose the F.F. style myself, Good shootin, Steve

My bow is rated for FF but man it's a whacker with that stuff. I like the B-50 and it performs just fine but my bow is short and I keep getting alot of string creep and it's causing me tuning issues. I'm just looking for the best for this bow that is quiet and performs well.
Thanks.

I sure like TS-1+ & D97. I just made a few strins with both. Then I made a couple of B-50 strings, wow that stuff is thick.......They all work well for me but I sure like TS-1+.

I like B-50,the other choices would be....B-50, B-50 or the other real good one B-50.....it just works to well for me. I know all the things good said about more up to date string materials, but like I said B-50 works for me.

If all you've tried is an off-the-shelf 18 strand FF string, you're in for a pleasant surprise with a well made, not horribly overbuilt string out of D97, TS1, UltraCam or 8125. I still don't understand why people build any string that thick and overbuilt.
Chad makes a nice string.

imho, if a bow's rated for modern string fibers then that's what i'll use - modern fibers like dyneema, vectran and spectra offer undeniable performance advantages, like added durability, very low creep/stretch and the outstanding ability to create really skinny (far lighter) strings - none of those apply to dacron. as the saying goes, ymmv!

D97. Because it was on sale. A spool of brown and a spool of green. I can't imagine needing to buy any more for a long, long time.

Right now im trying 8 strands of Ultra Cam, Ill see how that goes. I like the D97 but at 8 strands it seems to not want to stop creeping. 6 Strands of 450+ seems to work well and does not creep very much. But the 8 strand of Ultra Cam is thiner than the 6 strands of 450+ and 8 strands of D97 and is stronger than the D97 also, so we will see how it works for creep and durability. I just tied up and put this string on last night. Shot it some last night and it is a very quite string and performance (to my eye and tune) has picked up.
