hey give me a brake I was hanging around with Mr. Lamb back at the beginning of the year and he rubbed off on me...
Here goes. I was tagging a long on the Solana Ranch Trad Gang hunt this past winter toting my video camera and while watching the gang getting in some pre hunt practice I noticed this really sweet looking bow being shot by none other than Guru. Well after admiring this bow for the entire week I just couldn't get it out of my head.
Not only was this bow an eye catcher it was whisper quiet and other than the fact it was a lefty I just couldn't stop thinking about it. So after mulling over it for a few weeks (more like a few seconds) I contacted Curt and he filled me in on Jack Kempf and his Kwyk Styk bows.
Along about Feb. I decided I was ready for a new bow and I gave Jack a call. Curt had told me what a great man Jack was, but after talking with Jack on the phone for close to an hour I realized he was the real deal. A week later I had one of Jack's catalogs arrive at the house. I thumbed though it several times and decided to just give Jack a call and get his opinion.
All of my bows up till now were built using the darker woods so I really wanted something different. Jack made several suggestions and we agreed to go with curly maple. Not wanting the bow to be entirely light colored we decided to add black dymond wood flairs and wedges. We talked close to an hour about woods and what not and by the time we hung up the phone I felt like I had known Jack all my life.
The following day a check was in the mail with my order form. A little over a week later Jack called and said he had received my deposit and that he was going to get started on my bow very soon and that I should have it in about 6 months. The waiting began.
After hearing about the loss of Jack's daughter back at the beginning of the summer I figured Jack's bow building would be put on the back burner and for good reason. I just couldn't stop thinking about how generous he had been with his time so I decided to give him a call to express my heartfelt sorrow for his loss. He said that he had in fact taken a brake from bow building and he was behind on his orders. I told him to take as long as he needed and that if he just couldn't get back to building any time soon I totally understood. We talked for little while about everything other than bows and before we hung up he said he would most likely have my bow ready by hunting season.
Jack kept his word and yesterday this is what arrived!
