Knapping starting kit...Knives & Broadheads
« on: April 01, 2007, 05:50:00 AM »
After seeing the great looking knife adeeden did, I would like to know what would be a good starter kit so I can work on trying to make   :banghead:

Also can you tell what each tools does and how it works? and what are some great learning books on how to knapp?

Sal, First I would suggest a video and not a book.It is easier to learn by watching than by reading.Craig Ratzat and Bill Metcalfe have good videos for the beginner.  From what I hear Woody Blackwell also has a good video.

List of tools is pretty short. Pressure flaker, percussion flaker, leather leg pad, leather or rubber hand pad and an abrading stone.

A pressure flaker is for pushing flakes off and can be copper or antler.

A percussion flaker is for striking flakes off and can be of copper, antler, wood, aluminum or hammer stone.

Leather leg pad is for protection as is a leather or rubber hand pad.

An abrader is for roughening the surface to give a better gripping surface and creating a better platform for taking off flakes.

Some flint must be heat treated before it knaps well. I'm not familar with texas rock but that could be the issue.

Crash... Texas is full of Edwards chert, and that is probably what your useing, the poor grades will just shatter, try to find some higher grade. Burlington chert will knap like butter if heat treated, and will also get some neat colors when heat-treated....MYSTIC....www.tribaltrades.com has kits and Vid's

Google "PaleoPlanet". Lots of good info for beginners.

Craig's videos are Caught Knapping and Lap Knapping. Bill's video is An Introduction To Flint Knapping.

Here's one of them.  If it doesn't help your knapping, it's guaranteed to help with insomnia, doors that need to be propped open, or chairs with one short leg.  GGG
