What Trad archers should let Trad archers know!

  Now that the title got your attention, We should let each other know when the Black Morels start coming up.

Please add date found, region found, and what type habitat they were found in.

Morel hunting is a great way to pass time while waiting with you stick and string for those turks to start gobbleing.

I looked for several hours yesterday, I was upset I could not go to the Wheeling Trad Expo and used the time to hunt for my favorite fungus instead. I found zip, 0, nodda!

But then it has rained and the sun is out, so I hope to find some today. Usually start seeing them 1st week of April while scouting Toms here in southern Ohio. The weather has been warmer this year so they should be up and coming.

Please, if this is an appropriate thread to share this information while out scouting/hunting traditionaly, let your fellow, interested traditional bowhunter/archer know when you find the Morels by posting your info on this thread.

I don't know about posting the location, however, when you start to find them and the ground conditions would be helpful. I used to hunt them when I was a kid in Quincy IL. Finding Morels for some people is more of a find than gold, some will take their favorite hunting grounds to the grave with them. I am going to give it a go this spring in ND, I have heard we have them up here, just haven't found them yet.

I was out scouting this morning but didn't see any mushrooms..birds were a lot of fun to listen too.I heard four different roost with multiple birds gobbling at every one,,I just sat back for awhile ontop of my favorite ridge and just listened to a everyone wakeing on a new spring day.

When I lived in Pa. either the neigbors or the deer got the morels, ya had to be quicker then them, if you wanted any. That's a sacrid thing though and it's every man for himself, LOL!!

We use to find them about mid way up on the mountain. just scattered about

I mean,,, not exactly where you find them, I mean the type of terrain. Soil conditions, ridge top or bottom, in grass in leaves, how many, date, etc.

I'm head'n out about 12:30pm, keep'n in mind the turks I see/hear for April 23rds season opening for wild turkeys!

Yesterday Parke county Indiana, 3 black morels about 3/4 of an inch. South facing hillside with lots of poplar trees in the area. They were snuggled up in some grapevines. I find my first few of the year in this same spot every year. I won't seriosly look for any more for another 10 days or so. Then there will be enough to make the it worth looking.

Do a search on Google. There are two sites that post minute by mintue updates for darn near every state, county, city, etc. and past history for those locations too. If that doesn't help I don't know what will. It is updated by folks out looking for srooms.

found three small ones this morning. Down in the bottoms at the edge of leaves and grass. I heard of some people finding bags full on Saturday(which it rained over night on Friday)

These are not the black morels I am familiar with in South Dakota, but they taste as good to me. Found on the North side of a creek in a mature timber stand.

Not to hijack your very cool thread Osage.... but let is not forget leeks and ramps which will be ready for picking in about two weeks here in southeastern New York. And you find them in wetland areas.

Wow!!!! Look at all them fungi in that colander. Man you are lucky. I have only ever found one Morel in my life. It's the only shroom I would feel confident picking.

bluegill, Those look just like the morels we find here in Ohio. Wish I were you! I did not find a one in two days of searching. may not be up yet, but should be!

Reviveourhomes, Yes they grow in GA! Look at the photo above bluegill added in, those are morels.

I have found ramps up already and they are a great taste to gather as well. I'll get some pic's of ramps next time I'm out, which should be Wednesday!

Ramps added into fried potatoes a big venison steak and some morel mushrooms, don't get much better than that!

I do not suggest that anyone eat any type of mushroom unless you are positively sure it is edible.

There is a "False Morel" and it can be harmfull, But I can tell the difference between a black, grey, yellow or false morel. Please be sure you can before trying to eat one!!!!
