Baiting with coffee ...
« on: September 10, 2009, 12:46:00 PM »
Last year I carried my coffee cup with me while walking to the tree I was going to climb.  When I got there I realized I couldn't carry the cup up with me and set it at the base of my tree.

Wouldn't you know, a deer came walking right under me from behind, stopped for a minute to sniff the cup, then walked back the way she came.

I think I'll set my cup about 15 yard off to my left and see what happens.

I'm with Steve - if it is good coffee you might find me 15 yards to your left ;-)

That's wild. A buddy of mine chews tobacco while on stand and spits on the ground underneath him. Once while he was on stand, a doe came over and......you guessed it......proceeded to lick his tobacco spittage that was at the base of his tree! She never did spook. Deer are the most curious of creatures, ya just never know...

I agree with the curiousity. I know a guy who always got a deer. No matter what, he filled his tag, and it kinda frustrated the circle of people that shared those woods.
The year I turned 17, I got a great pair of binos for a present. Perched on top of a hill, I saw him set up about 500 yards away. He took a regular black garbage bag, filled it with air with a twitch. He then tied it off on a branch so that any wind would make it move. About an hour later I watched a big old doe walk up to the bag head bobbin, foot stompin.
I asked him about it years later-he grinned and said " I wish I used my radio that day, that woulda had ya guessing". Seems he would also set up a transistor radio and let them come check that out too...

I dip snuff and spit straight down under any treestand I happen to be in.  Last year hunting in Kansas I had the same two does come under my stand and lick, sniff, scratch at my "spit area" on two consecutive days... They spent almost an hour under me each time.  Deer are just amazing.

I've slammed loads of coffee and my pee smelled like it.  I let loose from the stand and have deer come right up and take a whiff.
Just one more step please!

I have and old huntin bud who swears the best bait for deer is a thermos lid of coffee and a lit cigarette!  Seems he was always having them show up when both hands were otherwise occupied LOL

Ishiwannabe -  Funny thing about the transistor radio story.  An older guy in the service department at the car dealership I worked at when I was 17 always filled his tags every season.  He told me once he would place a transistor radio out where he wanted to shoot and turn the volume just barely up to the point where you could hear it.  He'd light a cigarette, have a cup of coffee and sit back for the show.  I always figured he was just pulling my leg, but maybe he wasn't...

I've had them walk right up to the cup of coffee, take a drink, then leave a tip.

My dad still swears by chewing Redman while in the stand. He quit chewing years ago except during deer season. After he fills his tag he doesnt touch the redman until next season.

hvyhitter,  Now here where I live we call any flavored coffee "Sissy coffee" less it only has half & half cream and that still makes it fall under the term "Man Coffee"...Now Westbrook has the right idea...But is biscotti something like a stale bisquit...

Hvyhitter,

I have a bud that always takes some vanilla flavored  coffee beans with him. Places them down crossing a deer trail. Swears the deer stop and sniff. Sometimes that's all you need to get the best shot you can.
