A miss and a ....nother' miss
« on: September 14, 2009, 09:14:00 PM »
Well after spending close to 25 hours sitting in a stand saturday and sunday. Most of it in the rain. Seeing nothing more than an amorous pair of racoons. I climbed into my stand this evening at 5, Set my safety harness and sat down. Looked up and there were 3 does coming down the trail at me.... This is more like it!!  I'm instantly shaking like a leaf and finding it difficult to catch my breath. Good stuff! LOL

Big doe comes around a willow patch and stops, slightly quartering away at 13 yards or so. Textbook stuff. I drew back and let fly. Wasn't even a close miss! A foot in front of her. She jumps just a bit as the arrow buries in the dirt but then goes over and smells the arrow!  :knothead:    :knothead:

Oh well. A clean miss is better than a bad hit eh? Maybe tommorow will be my day.

As long as you know what you did wrong, you can correct it.  I have faith the third time will be the charm.  Good luck!

Ben there done that.  I missed a deer at 8 steps (8 yards give or take). I feel your pain! Keep shooting! Keep in there you will fill your freezer.

So what you are saying is, you missed the first one, and hit the other one the same place?  I get it.  *^).

I pulled off every shot I tried last year.  This year I've missed twice.  I hope it's not like getting the yips in golf.  Got a monkey on my back now and gotta get him off.

Makes me feel better that I'm not alone!  missed a hog at 10 yards yesterday.. then another at 20 not 10 minutes later.. I can shoot softball size groups all day long out to 30 yards on a target, but when it's crunch time with my trad bows, i'm having a hard time getting ahold of my emotions.. it's like i'm a kid again trying to kill my first deer with a compound.. after missing several times back then I thought it would never happen.. but eventually that got too easy, so I'm looking at it that way, that's why I changed over and I truly do learn something every time I miss.  I know when I finally do make it happen, it's going to be a GREAT accomplishment that I'll always be proud of!  Sure wish I was having pork tenderloin tonight though..    :D

You got the fever man.

I have to talk myself through my shots, otherwise I miss even with a compound, I get so amped I lose all composure.

After you have a few more encounters like that this year, you will settle down and make the shot.

Deep breath, pick a spot, draw anchor ,good clean release. Next time one comes in say that to yourself and do it. Hey we all miss. You'll get one.

my first miss with trad gear was last year. i had a nice 8 point come up along with 3 other bucks. i waited for the perfect shot, when he stepped into the opening I calmly drew , anchored and released. the arrow was on a string to the spot i picked ,and then whack i hit a limb the size of a pencil and the arrow stuck at his feet. it was still awesome though. from then on i was hooked for sure. Oh yeah  30 minutes later i had a doe come in. i missed her 3 times. when i was out of arrows to fling at her i laughed and threw my water bottle at her.

I missed two turkeys in less than 30 seconds this spring...the first was at spitting distance and the second was around 16 yards.

I'm 0-4 on birds and 0-0 on deer and other assorted critters.

I'm still after it...keep going.
