New Mohawk longbow question

I got my new Mohawk from vince last thursday and let me tell you it is one fine piece of equipment, Vince says it shoots 2018s real well can some of you Mohawk shooters chime in here and let me know your setup for arrows. The bow is 64" 56#@28"

I so far have found good luck with GT 5575s full length, std. aluminum inserts, and 145, 175, or 200gr field tips.  With 200gr tips the total arrow weight is just over 500 grains.

I cut a few shafts down to 31" and they got too stiff for me with the same weight up front.

Curiously - the flight was very tolerant of changes in point weight, but not tolerant at all of shortening the length of the shaft.

Someone on this forum said about arrow shafting "Start long, and cut slow - they don't grow back."

I havent tried any carbons yet, woods fly like darts. And so far all the arrows I have have been way over spined.
got some other arrows on the way, I was just fishing for other opions and trials.

I'm completely new to trad archery, and I'm having a Mohawk bow made for me, 40-45#. Vince said that I should have it by the end of October. If it weren't for this site, I'd be lost as of what kind of bow to buy.  There are so many bowyers to choose from, but I have heard nothing but good things about Mohawk.  When I spoke to Vince he had just returned from chasing elk around the mountains--Sounds like a winner.

I have had 3.Just got my 3rd one thats 66 inches and 50#s at 30.This 66 incher is very smooth shooting let me tell ya.

Any way the other 2 were 62 inches and 64.
They were 53 and 55 #s at 30 inches draw.I cut my arrows about 31 inches.

Out of this new one I am shooting 2018s cut 30.5 inches.I am drawing it a hair under 30 inches.

I think a 2018 is gonna be a good choice for you if you draw 28 inches and cut your arrows 29 inches long.Another arrow that may shoot well for you is a 2115.I would go ahead and get some diffent weight field ponts in 100 grain,125,145 and 160 if you can find them and play with point weight some.You are definatly in the ball park with the 2018s.They should fly well for you and its a great arrow with some weight and they are strong.

i shoot 2613's off my mohawks and they fly like darts with no change from b-head to field points...650 grains

My Mohwawk is the takedown model, 62" 57# @ 27" which is my draw length.  I shoot 2018's that are cut to 30" and a total arrow weight of 620 gr.   They fly really well and most Mohawk owners that I have heard from think that their bows really like heavy arrows, I agree.  Really nice bows and Vince is a great guy also.

Hey Elkherder, Which Mohawk do you shoot?

Also, can someone explain why longbows shoot better with heavier arrows?  I will be getting my Mohawk from Vince next week 40-45# and will need to get some arows.  I have some Goldtip 3555 arrows, but not sure if they will have enough spine weight etc.. for this bow.  I'm new to traditional so any help is appreciated.

My Mohawk is 64" 52@28" and likes 30" Heritage arrows with 200 grains up front, 50  grain brass inserts with 150 grain heads, they fly like darts. I got them right around 600gr. A great bow, I love mine, I really do!

Thanks guys, I can't wait to get mine. I've read nothing but great things about these bows.  Vince has been super easy to work with too.  Hopefully I can get up to speed to hunt whitetails this season--if not maybe take a tom in the spring or a hog....who knows. I just want to start shooting!

Mine is a 64" 60#@28, I draw 26.5" and just started shooting 69# spined woodies at 30" with 145 up front and it loves them!

fwiw ... 62" t/d, 55# @ 29", 29.5" beman 500 ics, 350 grains up front (29% foc), 4" 4-fletch, total arra weight is 585.  string type, weight, brace height, nocking point location, shooting style - all this stuff also plays an important role in matching arras to bows.  

take anyone's bow/arra setups with a lotta salt grains - at best they're rough guidelines - ya still gotta do yer own testing.  

yes indeed, vince and his mohawks are a class act in every respect.

My Mohawk arrived today--what a beauty!  I'm glad I picked this bow for my first.  Thanks to all of you for helping me make up my mind.  I think I'll be hooked on traditional from now on.
