my '09 hunting arrows
« on: September 17, 2009, 02:20:00 PM »
I made these as my hunting arrows for this season. Talk about unmatched! Each shaft is a different native shoot I found on my property, each has a different fletching style and each have a different style stone point made by different knappers.
One arrow is hill cane with my version of a two fletch, another is viburnum with standard 3 fletch, another is sourwood with a Cherokee two fletch and finally a silky dogwood with a tangential 3 fletch. The points are hafted with pitch glue and sinew wrapped. All fletchings are tied on front and back with sinew(no glue) and all shafts and sinew wraps are sealed with pine pitch varnish.
My hunting bow for this year is a yew self bow with hand rubbed bear grease finish. She pulls 47#@26" and shoots all of these arrows very well.

Pat, they look great. Are they even close spin/weight wise or do you just compensate for their differences.

With hardwood shoot and cane arrows I generally don't worry about spine...if they shoot well they are spined OK for me. As for weight these range from 595gr to 710gr; cane is 599gr, sourwood is 595gr, viburnum is 648gr and silky dogwood is 710gr. All of my cane and hardwood shoot arrows are front heavy and these points weigh from 100gr to 188gr.
I limit myself to 15 yards with my primitive equipment and at that distance I can put each of these in the kill zone of my 3D target. If I wasn't sure of them I WOULD NOT hunt with them.

All of these fletching methods work very well. The two fletched ones are tied off front and back with a 90deg different front to back.

Good stuff Pat. That cane arrow with the blue stone point looks like a dead deer walking to me, then again, my one experience with dogwood was a pass through. Good Hunting!

that's a pretty sweet setup. Maybe one of these days I'll go that route but for now I think I'll stick to my curve and longbow.
Good luck and good shootin'
