How to make up 650+gr arrows
« on: September 18, 2009, 08:33:00 AM »
Hi

I have just purchased my first traditional bow, a 55# scythian recurve.

I would like to know how to make up a 650 gr arrows to suit this bow. I live in South Africa, so arrow choices are limited and I prefer using a carbon arrow. I will be hunting all plains game.

Thanks in advance.

Gold Tip 5575 cut to 29"
100 grain brass insert (secured with JB Weld)
150 grain broadhead (Woodsman for me)
About 27" of 5 gpi weight tubes from 3Rivers
Total = 646 grains

There are many ways to get there.  This is what I am shooting right now from a 55# Lost Creek.  Good luck with the new bow.

I go along with doeslayer carbon express 350s very tuff arrow and use 100 gr inserts and the point will be whatever you bare shaft well with , but Iam sure it will be up there.good luck and have fun.

I like the AD Trads and the AD Hammerhead Trads (along with the Lite versions of both of these). They are very forgiving of point weight and draw weight. I have bumped the weight of the arrows plus points up to 915 grains without any problem. The Carbon Express shafts are nice too, but not as forgiving as the AD shafts. There are all sorts of combinations of shafts, inserts, and points you could put together to end up with finished arrows in the 650 grain range. If I were you I would probably start with Hammerhead Lites and 100 grain brass inserts and go from there. You should be able to easily get the arrow weight you want and would end up with a super tough shaft that would work well at your bow's draw weight.

Hi

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I am leaning towards using easton aluminium arrows. Will the 2018's be fine with a 125gr head, also what if I use a 190gr Grizzly broadhead, what shaft do I need to use?

Thanks
Dox
