Elk Down

Had a thread a while back about taking elk with a longbow. Started this hunt with the longbow, but my lack of ground skills I brought out the recurve. Figured my shots might be in the 40 yrd range. Hunted for 14 days. Had some neet encounters with the elk in the area. Seen some nice bulls - 360+ class. Hunted one bull with 8 cow/calf for three days. Got within 65 yrds of bull. Each day he and his cows moved farther away. Monday morning a satelite started harassing the bunch. Put the elk to bed and went back that evening. Set up at the edge of a beaver pond for a ambush when they came into have a drink. Bull bugled from timber and I thought it was game time. Sat for a hour with nothing coming in. Only noise in the timber. Forced the issue and started calling like a lost cow. Bull would answer, but wouldn't come looking. Keep calling and had the satelite come in to see what was up. Not the bull I wanted, but a bull none the less. He stood at 18 yrds at the waters edge looking for the cow. Drew on him and he turned away. Held the draw and waited for him to turn. He spun a 180 and started to walk right at me. Held steady and had him pass at 6 feet. Punched him through both lungs and expired in 80 yards. Meat in the freezer and antlers for the wall.

WAY TO GO, Brian!!!
Great job of adapting to the situation you were given and "closing the deal" when crunch time came...
My fondest dream would be to accomplish something like you did on this hunt.
