Cresting Crackled HELP ?
« on: September 26, 2009, 11:09:00 PM »
I think I got in a hurry and think I know what I did wrong but wanted to ask for opinions ? My Minwax Polycrylic crackled over my testors cresting. Looks fine on the white cap dip and the stained part of the shaft, just crackled over the testors cresting. The white cap dip is Krylon acrylic enamel that had dried for about two days. The testors had dried for 24 hrs.

With the testors being oil based enamel and the Minwax Polycrylic being water based I think that is where I got the problem with too short of a dry time on the testors ? I ran this same combo last year with no problems, but I think my testors dried for about a week before I dipped in the MinWax Polycrylic ?

I have sanded it all back down and re-dipped the white cap and will crest later in the week. Thinking about ditching the Polycrylic and using wipe on poly from Minwax. I have heard others using it and with it being oil based should be more compatible with the testors ? How long do most of you let your testors dry before putting your poly or lacquer on ? Thanks for the help gang.

I let it dry as close to 48 hours as possible.  You know sometimes you just got to finish your arrows.  Getting in a hurry with wood arrows usually does you in.

Hmm...I've polycrylic'd over shaft paint work a day after with no problems.Maybe you applied the clear too thick?I usually wipe on 5 or so light coats with a rag and they come out great.

You've discovered by accident the secret to antique crackled paint.

I am using the Polycrylic thinned down with water in a dip tube. I thinned it just a little to help it drip off the shaft good so it does not pile up on the end of the shaft.

Which is more durable finish to eliminate target burn, the Polycrylic or wipe on oil base poly ? I would think the wipe on oil base would be ? I think it will be less problem too since it should be more compatible with the testors enamel. Both being oil based.

I say the oil base is.I have polycrylic finished shafts that need to be coated again because the target taking the finish off.I don't think I coated them enough though,as they were the first shafts I made.

Think I will not take the chance again and give the Minwax wipe on oil base a try. I will try to report back on target burn and let everyone know how it holds up Think I will put on three coats and hope it does not turn my white cap dip too yellow ???

I too found the Polycrylic to be not very durable. I use Minwax Hellmsman spar urethane mixed with almost %50 mineral spirits to hold up real well. 5-6 thin coats.

"Getting in a hurry with wood arrows usually does you in."...man aint that the truth!

How are you guys getting the oil base stuff on, brushing, wiping ? What about yellowing your white crest underneath ?

I dip them.

There is some yellowing, but I dont mind.

That is why I was wondering about the Daly's, I think it stays clear.

That was the whole reason I went with water based paint and the Polycrylic, so that I could just rinse my PVC tubes out with water when finished. I do like to dip.

However, with the oil finish poly how do you clean your dip tube, or do you just have a dedicated tube to store it in ?
