Back from NE with pics
« on: September 27, 2009, 11:43:00 AM »
Only pics,no deer. But the hunt was well worth it,we drove 2500 miles to hunt a state that is 170 miles from home! LOL  The first 3 days(and nites) were recon. Slept in the truck 2 nites, motel 1

Finally set up camp and started hunting, covered a LOT of ground, saw quite a few deer. The trip was well worth it for the one eve with a great non-typ muley.
It had rained off and on,put rain gear on 3 or 4 times. Finally headed to the truck, rain quit, took rain gear off again, stepped over to look in a flat valley with steep sides about 30 ft. tall and there he was. 5x5 with stickers to make him 6x9,feeding to the east.
There was a cedar grove 50 yds east,so since I spotted him,bro told me to go get im! Made an end run around the hill, down a sandy wash into the cedars, bellycrawled 30 ft. ,found a setup and was 50 yds from him! He swapped ends a couple times as he fed,but had 3 hrs til dark and good wind,so I waited. Out of cover anyway,so no choice,12" grass between us.

After 10 min. or so,he threw up his head, and I knew we were done, swirly winds! He took a couple bounds and looked hard around the valley, then a few more and looked some more. Then over the ridge in no big hurry.

Bro watched him from above the whole time and field guessed him at 198",not that the number matters.

Took a LOT of pics, back with some when they load!! Sorry,no pic of the big boy,had other things on my mind!  :wavey:
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Now this was good!!

The peak just behind John is where the 5x5 was bedded,he moved off the hill before we got started that way and we never found him. But this lil dinker found us!!

This was a gate in the cedar row,the deer was about 20 from me,green lite never came on....

Hope you all enjoyed the pics, they didn't even come close to bein there.  If you can save the change,

GO SOMEWHERE TO HUNT!!

You'll never forget it!   :wavey:

Glad You and John had a good trip Kenny. I'm waiting for a chance to hunt with My Brother again. He's been raising triplets for 18 yrs. and hasn't gotten to hunt much. Hopefully when they go off to college He'll get out some.

Great pictures Kenny

Nebraska is an extremely diverse state.  Looks like you were hunting the end opposite of where I live.   :)

Thanks for sharing the pics.  I've got a few places to hunt out in that part of the state, but rarely get there due to job/family demands.  Your pics make me want to carve out some time to head west.

Thanks guys! Brett, hope you get to hunt with your bro soon!

This country is best described as BIG,NE is a state with great diversity. You can look one direction and see-

corn, hay, sagebrush, bluffs, rivers or just about anything all at the same time!

Bryce, this was all public lands,I imagine the private ground is super hunting,if anything like MO.  Go West young man!!

Kenny.

Bad luck about not getting anything but I guess thats why they call it hunting.
Those pics where awesome and it does look like you had a ball and refreshed the old batteries.

Gonna have to get you down here to TX for a hog hunt some time.

Hey Kenny, what part of the state were you hunting? We are heading back out there this fall. We hunted around Fort Robinson State Park.

We are heading out during the second week of November.

Kenny Great pics. Sorry we couldn't meet up at Halsey. We had a great trip and no deer, turkey or antelope was injured. I did get a gopher and a prairie dog. Chased some turkeys had a long shot but missed. Had a nice 8 point whitetail at 12 yards but busted me trying to draw on him. Dad had some opportunities at antelope but didn't connect. Saved a tortis from near suiside in the middle of the road. I'll post some pics from our hunt soon (maybe tonight).

I've been trying to 'reconnect' with my cousin who grew up in Grand Island, for several reasons...one of them involving hunting   :)

It'd be a long trip from Mass but I think well worth it
