MN bow building weekend-who's coming?
« on: April 03, 2007, 10:51:00 PM »
You don't have to commit for sure, I'm not going to hold you to it but I need to start getting an idea on how many people to expect.

I heard that getting a hotel room that weekend will be tough due to a fire fighter's convention that weekend.  Camping in my yard will be free. I have a lot of room and a very nice environment for camping.   I'm trying to line up shower facilities at a campground down the road.

You need to plan to be self sufficient.  What I am providing is a place to gather free of charge. Food, materials, bench to work on, and tools are your responsibility.  You welcome to use my stuff but 1 band saw and sander will only go so far.  People have volunteered to bring sanders, forms, hot box, staves, etc. but these are the things we need to find out for sure.

Email or PM me if your planning on coming.  We are having some computer problems so if our computer crashes I will have someone put my phone number on this thread.

If your not sure what I'm talking about then do a search on "MN bowbuilding" .  Thanks,  Chad Holm

A couple links to campgrounds within 2 miles.  One is a state park one is privately owned.  Chad

I'm pretty sure I'll make it.  If we can get a generator to provide 220 I can bring my huge bullet proof Delta sander, with a belt/disc combo, 48" x 6" belt. It uses a plug that has the prongs at 90 deg to the normal? I'll need to bring the plug in with me to adapt it, then do some other jury rigging to the generator. The belt is long enough to do limb edges with, and is powerful enough to take off skin very quickly if one is not careful. Dust collection on this unit is a little iffy.

I'm also bringing all the templates, drill jig, hot box, form, etc that I use to make my longbow, which is just the Bingham Pronounced in 62".

If anyone wants to build one, they could just order a limb kit and riser kit from Binghams.  Could easily adapt the form to do up to 66" too. Or I'm sure we could grind the lams and fades from the get go and all they'd have to buy is the glass and limb locking hardware.

I've got a lam grinder I can bring, with sleds for parallel and .002/in.

I'll throw in my Delta 1 1/2 HP 1 micron dust collector too, at 110 it might draw quite a bit of current tho, I'm always blowing breakers, just need to wire it 220 and be done with it. All I have is the original 6' chunk of 4" flex hose it came with, when I get a shop I'm hard plumbing it with blast gates.

The thing I don't have is the bandsaw, at least a good one. That's about all I need. You wouldn't happen to have a footed riser jig for the bandsaw would you?

If you have a drill press I could bring my robo sanders to make fades, and maybe try a footed riser.

I also want to try a 1 piece hybrid or HH style, haven't done that yet.

I also have string building stuff if there's any time left.

I have a generator and big drill press.  We'd run the big sander outside w/ generator.  Lam grinder would be great.  We would do as much as possible outside so the dust collector would be optional.  Chad

As of now I'm planning to come, if you guys will let and onld ND boy join in the fun. If I do I'll bring whatever I have that may help.  I guess it would be good to take inventory from everyone sometime close to the date.
All of the bows I've made up until now have been take down recurves. I have the forms and templates and perhaps some hardware for those.
I also just bought a gallon of Fuller Plast that I could bring along with an air brush for anyone who would like to try that finish.  A gallon does dozens of bows and I know I'll never use it all befor it goes bad.

Welcome Brad, your sure more than welcome to use my TD longbow stuff too. We should really think about some of the consumables like Smooth On too. This will give me a good reason to finish my Binghams Kids TD recurve form as well so we can build some kids bows, I think I'll order some Smooth On while I'm at it.
Always wanted to try some of that Fuller Plast stuff.
