well I thought with everyone out there gettin birds and new feathers I thought I would do a turkey feather split, cut, shape along.
It can be as basic as 60 grit sand paper, wood block, pair of small shears, sissors, card board. Enjoy,,,

sand with the block to get an even quill for glueing to your arrow.
Some fine tweaking
And then your all done. You can leave them for fluflus or cut to your desire.

Cool. I just posted on getting a fletching jig after doing your method for the first time ( though not near as good ) How do you tie them on afterwards, by hand or jig.

I use fletch tape and some regular fletching glue for the tips of them. Some day when I have more time I'll tie some up on some nice ceader.

Real nice. Simpler than using a drum sander, with results that are just as good...

Thanks fellas, Honestly I don't know why folks send them out to have them ground when that block turns them out real nice and thats about the fastest part of that whole process. That 60 grit is tuff.

I never tried the clamp method because they always said to use a straight clamp but all I have is RW. Looks like you used a helical clamp too. I've got 4 pairs of wings coming to me in a couple of weeks and I'll have to give it a try.
I tried stripping them but I get such an inconsistent base that they twist after mounting. I'll see how your method works.
Thanks.

Rob, any time man,,
Thanks Dank,
Talondale, it works fine for me, ya just gota watch what your doing as you sand. Keep a close eye on the whole edge and you'll be just fine. These feathers are simple and shoot great. I love wild turkey feathers just need to get more of them.

I don't have a fletching jig but got this clamp at office depot, sanded, and tied with thread on a .49 dowel, cut with scissors. 2nd attempt.

What do you do if the base is too wide, as when your feather is fairly short and you have to use some of the heavier quill end? I recently cut and sanded some goose feathers this way, but had difficulty trimming the width of the brittle quill to a manageable size. Scissor cuts were jagged and rough, and I couldn't find a good way to sand the side of the quill base without damaging the actual feather.
Pete.

I will use a scalpel and I wil make repeated cuts until I'm through. Just when you start the cut stay on the same cut untill through.

That looks really neat. I have a pile of wing feathers in the basement that I should use.
