Arkansas Bear DOWN
« on: October 09, 2009, 10:17:00 AM »
I love to hunt bears.  I have hunted them 10 times now and twice in the last five weeks.  In Sept I was in Maine, and was lucky enough to kill a bear.

However it has always been a dream of mine to bait and hunt my own bears.  Come to find out 120 miles from my house I can do that.  Last year my wife got invited to hunt bears in AR, I did most of the baiting and experienced the coolest bear hunt I had ever been on.  Mindy shot a 240lb bear with her bow from a ground blind at 14 yards, and I was setting in the blind when she did it.

Now this year was my turn, and I did all the baiting.  Thanks to Flowers bread store and my local Budweiser distributor I had plenty of bait.  I had three baits out, but only two were getting hit.  One bait had 4 bears on it and the other literally has 12 or more bears on it.  I have numerous trail cam pics.

I hunted the opening night which was Oct 1, I had a sow and 2 cubs in but not the big boy I was looking for.  Then I had to head home because my sister was in town, man she has crummy timing.

Monday 10/5 I was back down with my dad.  I put him on the best bait because he did not kill a bear in ME, so I really wanted him to kill a bear in Arkansas.

He had bear in, but too dark to shoot.  This sow came in at 7:00, like she owned the place.  The rest is in the pictures.

Notice my left eye.  Getting my bear out, we were moving a downed tree.  When we dropped it somehow it spun and hit me in the face.  Ended up going to the ER in Clarksville, AR then to the opthamologist when we got back.  The eye is just a little blurry now.

My buddy has invited me over to hunt bears but they have stopped hitting the bait piles. Maybe due to bow hunters hitting the woods? What are you using for bait? Beer and bread?

Forgot to mention it weighed 255 lbs.

Bait used.
Mainly Sweets (honey buns, cupcakes, cinnimon bread, donuts, and bagels)

Budweiser provided all the grease I could handle.  Last year when I was looking for grease I was pointed there.  The Bud Distributer has 7 trucks converted to bio diesel.  Of couse they can't use the crummy grease and I don't want the good grease so it was a match made in heaven.  They were disappoined I did not bring a flat bead trailer so they could load the 275 gallon container on it.

Very neat, you just don't hear about southern bear hunting..

Long as I can pull this bow
Long as I can hike the hills and walk among the trees
I keep on trying
My goals are high but I don't care
The fun is in the getting there, it justifies the end
So try, try again
