archers paradox, fine shooting and a robin hood
« on: April 05, 2007, 07:57:00 AM »
with recurves (Fita style recurves)

Watch the action of the arrows as they fly towards the targets in slow mo. Same thing happens to your arrows (Fly like a dart? yea right!) Also look at the bowstring and sight wiggling around after the arrow is released (yep your string reacts the same way you just think it slams to a stop ha ha)

Sorry no subtitles LOL

Gotta admit, I've always loved seeing that video clip. Especially the robin hood at the end...

Heck that's cool.  I saw the same thing happen in a target tournement years ago at 70 meters.  Most everyone was still shooting aluminum arrows then and a couple of us were shooting carbon.  I was on the scope when one of our group shot up the tail of an bigger shaft and stripped his fletch off.  His arrow was about 10 yds behind the target.  We had to ask the judge for a ruling since his arrow had never touched the target.  LOL

Mike how'd they rule?

Joe it's a breast plate or nipple protector usd in target archery. Keeps stuff out of the bowstring.

It's called a Heraean Shield, after the greek goddess Hera who, according to mythology, used it to protect her...um..."front" from the bowstring.

Pretty amazing shooting. I wonder how many shots it took.

its a little bit easier to do with the nock removed, but still a tremendous feat to try, and succeed, on camera.

well, i guess that was the good idea by hera. I heard once that as amazon girls started having things "develope" they would burn off the left, ummm, "front" so it wouldnt interfere with their shooting.

Thank you Sir! I should post pics of some of the bows I have bought over the last year (most havent even been STRUNG yet!) when I get a chance, I will...one of them is especially "special" to me, it took some persistence, but I got it. LOL.

Now this sounds suspicious.

I noted a lot of things; as I had the time   :campfire:    :archer:

bentpole when I shot for Hoyt they sent me two tapes to watch. Compounds and recurves being shot in ultra slow motion (something like 6,000 frames per second). You would not believe how wooden shafts and aluminum shafts bend ... or metal risers, sights and stabilisers for that matter as well. We THINK because it's what we see, that when a bow is shot the arrow flies straight to the target, that there is no movement to the bow and that the string moves forward and stops as it comes to brace, when in reality, and I'm not joking about this, all parts bend and wiggle like they are made of jello. Risers flexing back and forth, attachments to bows twisting to and fro, arrows look like snakes flying toward the target and the string going back and forth many many times...and with the recurve archers paradox with the arrows initial bend upon release is truly frightening. I'm here to tell you watching it will scare the hell out of you and make you wonder why archery equipment doesn't fail during every shot.

I lent my copies to someone who never returned them. Wish I still had them. They are unbelieveable. If you ever get a chance to see them, make sure you do, and see if you still feel the same way about archery equipment ever again.
