Do you hunt with a bow that is too pretty to hunt with?
« on: October 11, 2009, 10:52:00 PM »
I acquired this Holcomb semi-repro of a '59 Kodiak Special this past summer. Gorgeous, flawless workmanship, one of the prettiest bows I've owned and I've owned most of the high end bows. Top-notch craftsmanship, high gloss finish, as perfect as they get in every way.
Problem,(is this a problem?), is that I shoot it better than any bow I own. I bought it as a "looker" but dang-it, it really shoots.
I'm going to hunt with it. Beat it to heck, rough it up,.....completely use it up!
There, I've said it, time to go hunting.

To hang a bow and not shoot it, is to insult that bow.  That's what it was made for, not to be hung for people to ogle over.  Hunt with it and buy some art.

I collect turkey calls and have a few that are worth some big money and hunt with'em every year. My wife throws a fit, firstly cause I bought them
secondly cause I take'em to the woods. Heck I figure that's what they're made for right?
I been shooting trad for about five years but am recently getting to the point that I want every bow I see. Guess the wife will be throwin a fit bout something besides turkey calls, both when I buy'em and when " I'm going to hunt with it. Beat it to heck, rough it up,.....completely use it up!"
Couldn't of said it better myself. Good luck and good hunting, Kris

Yep, use it up; you can always get it refinished when it is done.  I took the prettiest Silvertip I thought I would ever have and beat it to heck in the mountains of Colorado a few years ago for a month hunting Bighorn sheep.  Every scratch brings a smile to my face when I look at it.

I shoot an absolutely gorgeous Wes Wallace Royal that is way to pretty to hunt with.  I don't worry about the scratches and nicks it gets while in the field.  Bows like fine wine and women only get better with age.

Sounds like you dance very well with it Doug.I say take it out in the woods and cut a rug.Very Nice bow.I have seen that one before.

I have certainly hunted with some serious pieces of art.I like to use the spandex limb skins to keep the scratches and things to a minimum.

Good luck with that beauty

Joe Buck made me a Swamp Rooter recurve. It's waaaaaay too pretty to ding up and throw in the back of the truck like I do most of my bows.
But it's too good a shooter not to hunt with.

I just take extra care with it, like a CASE, like drying it off after it gets wet, like keeping a light coat of wax on it.  :-)

Like ol George said, it would be an insult not to use it.

I heard a guy say one time : " hunting with an ugly bow is like taking your sister to the prom "

Not sure about that one but, they were made to hunt with use em and take care of em like biggie is doing.

Get a "Fat Head" made of it and hang that on the wall, but a bow is made to hunt!

I look at my bows after a few weeks in the woods and I'm like, its finally getting some character, along with a kill under its string! Life is good!

Personally Ii buy a bow to shoot and hunt with, I don't buy one to hang on the wall to look at!

No such thing as a girl too perdy, too much money, or a bow too fast!  :D   Wasn't that in a song?

A bow, IMHO, was made to hunt.  Just dont abuse it, and like already said, proper care after hunting is the way to go.
