3 bundle strings...interesting!
« on: October 15, 2009, 03:13:00 AM »
Well I just finished my first 3-bundle string and I’m please!  It needs some work next time in the larger loop (first one I twisted) but the smaller loop looks good. I can tell the second loop went much smoother as the twists are more even.

I actually hit the length I was going for on the first try...if my first loop would have been a touch tighter I'd feel confident enough to sell it.

All in all I’m happy and will be offering these soon!  Let me get everything squared away and I’ll see what I can do for people.

I think I’m going to throw some serving on it and send some arrows down range!

Well I just checked weather.com and yep…it’s cold outside at 3:40 am, granted I should have had more than a t-shirt and sweatpants on!  I sure the neighbors are thinking…idiot shooting his bow in the dark with floodlights…40 degree weather.  Must have a screw loose  :goldtooth:  !  No screws here…just wood and fiberglass w/ D-97 wrapped with halo! It shot really nice.

I really need to get to bed!  "[dntthnk]"

I’ll get some photos in the light tomorrow.  Going to make another one in the morning, okay later this morning!

bdawg...I'll get you some photos posted later today.

You have to be a bit more careful with three bundles, especially with bundle tension.  You can wind up with one bundle too short or too long if your twists aren't right on, or if there are minor differences in the string materials (this happens a lot).

I know some people prefer them, but (properly made) there's no advantage to three bundle strings--just more work for the string maker.

Chad...thanks for the info!

I could tell my second loop was much tighter than the first.  When I make my next one it should tighten up even more, hopefully.  My bundles had equal tension…I was surprised since it was my first 3-bundle.  I’ve seen two bundles have tension problems…scrap pile material.  I use those to pad future strings.

I'm doing it just to learn...and if I can make well, then I'll offer it as an option.  Something for everyone I guess.

I keep learning all I can…I’m going to make an endless jig later this fall.

Thanks,

Josh

I find a 3 bundle string a little easier to make for me. I'm working with (let's say) 3 bundles of 4 strands rather than 2 bundles of 6 strands. Just smaller bundles to work with. This really come into play when make a string out of B-50.

Three bundle strings take me a bit longer to make, but I like the looks and the roundness factor under the serving I think is better.

Bringing the loop together at first was a bit tricky for me.  The first few I made, I didn't get the 'braid' tight enough for my liking, but after a few you'll figure out what you need to do to make it work.

I'd love to post a picture of mine, but I have never quite figured out how to post pics here.
