My first attempt at making woodies

I started my adventure on Saturday morning at around 9:00 AM with a trip to Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear. Normally it is not too exciting drive but with it being 20 degrees and freezing rain the 90 mile drive would be interesting and there was a 20 car pileup between me and my destination. I finally made it to RMSG and once again the crew up there came through. I told them this was my first time making woodies and they spent a lot of time with me sharing there advice and making sure I have the right shafts and all of the items I needed. This is some of what I came home with. I decided that if I have some woodies my boy needs a matching set.

 

I jumped right in! I started staining and preparing the shafts.
 

Time to dip! I am using Bohning Fletch Lac, man does that stuff put off some fumes! After they dried overnight I dipped them in the lacquer.

 

After more time drying (I think that is the worst part, waiting) it was time to start adding the points and nocks. Now for the fun part CRESTING! While I am still learning, I think I enjoy this the most.

 

Now on to the fletchings!

 

I am making progress!

 
 

What a way to spend a cold weekend, making my first set of woodies, now I just need to shoot them! I have league tonight so we will see how they fly! Thanks for letting me share. by the way these are for my 60#@28" Mohawk that I draw around 26 1/2 and they loved these shafts spined at 69#

Building woodies is probably the best part of trad to me,other than making arrows bloody.  :goldtooth:

Oh the joy of fletching up a dozen arrows and then getting to shoot them!!!  :thumbsup:  Bet you are already thinking of how you could do the next batch better...or a different cresting pattern...on and on it goes! Good job.

Nice job.  One thing you may want to do is straighten them a couple of times before staining and sealing.  I never get shafts 100% straight from the dealer.

Thanks for all the kind words. I think I did find a new addiction. Like Snag said, I am already thinking about the next set, maybe a feather chopper, multi fletcher....the list is growing. What an adiction! Of course my wife doesn't see it my way, but it is better than a bar!

Exactly Matt! There are worse ways to spend your time. Plus, it's fun!!! I look forward to seeing your other efforts in the future.  I started out with a single jig...then bought a 6 jig JoJan...now I have 12 Bitzenburger jigs on a lazy-susan.  Just a warning! Whatever you do don't try splicing feathers! I couldn't stop splicing for quite awhile. At first it was kind of frustrating.  :knothead:   Then when I got the hang of it it was like a break through.  :thumbsup:    Enjoy!          David
