Well, I will set this up for you. My hunting time has been VERY limited so far this year,and it has little hope of getting better. Wifes work,my work,kiddo's shcool.. They all have been busy this fall and it has been going fast. I started on a BIG house this past Monday and have been working about 9-10hr. days. Thats been nice(first house in about 2yrs.). I have found that my carpenter muscles have been resting to long as this week has made me a bit stoved up. This will come into play later in my story.
SO.. Last night I got home from work at about 4:45pm. I ran in the house and showered, tossed on my gear and walked down the road to the farm I can hunt and crossed the 1/2mile of fresh plowed field to my stand. To my delight I was looking at alot of deer sign all the way in. I have not been seeing much this year and this time I was looking at alot of tracks. One was about 4"x5" very BIG. I get to my stand and set up. I was going over some ideas of moving and setting up in different spots to play the rut better and to have a spot for my daughter and I to hunt. I was looking into the woods,spying for that perfect tree to relocate to and when I looked back at the field I had a nice little buck coming right at me. He walked to with-in about 40yds. and turned a bit to show me what he had and I said lets do it. He resumed walking right at me and tried to enter the woods on the trail that I came in on.(I am setting on the edge of the field with the woods behind me). He smelled something(me) that stops him in his tracks. So for the next 10-12min. I wait for him to sniff every weed and leaf and blade of grass. I can't shoot because I have a small tree in between us. He is getting jiggy and I have to do something. I try to reposition and everytime I move some mud falls off my boots and hits the dry leaves under my stand. I am getting jiggy now. Did I tell you that he is at about FIVE yards? Well, he looks away and seems like he is wanting to bail out, so I slip my left foot a bit to the left,crouch,draw and loose in one motion. Under a limb and around the tree. I hit him about at the last rib and sent my 750gn.arrow out the opposite crease.PERFECT shot I said to myself. He bails and all I can see is RED on both sides as he runs 100yds across the field, and about 150 yds down the standing corn. I said to myself..."I thought it was PERFECT"
I followed a blood trail that was FIVE FEET up on the corn and found him at the spot I thought I heard him crash. I flip him over and check out both sides and the shot was PERFECT. Both lungs and a tick of the liver. Deer never cease to amaze me with how tough they are. A short FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY yd drag and a 1/2 mile walk to fetch my rig and I had the ole boy loaded and headed for home. WOW! I LOVE TRADITIONAL BOW HUNTING.
