Deer hide/back quiver?
« on: October 30, 2009, 04:34:00 PM »
Shot my first deer with my longbow, and would like to have the hide tanned and make a quiver out of it. Ive never had a hide tanned, but wonder if a deer hide is "thick" enough to use for that purpose? Anybody ever done it, pics? If its too thin, what other things can be made from the hide?
thanks,
Ken
I'm not a "deer" hunter, I'm a bow hunter that occasionally shoots a deer.

Yes deer hide works pretty good for a quiver here is one I made about a year ago. I also made an arm guard out of it.

It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.

Made this from my first trad deer last year. Basically just streatched the hide on a sheet of plywood, removed all meat and membrane and salted it down.

Once it was dried I made the quiver out of it. Stiched it together with rawhide boot laces.

Got the strap (leather belt) from goodwill store.
