cracks in glass help!!
« on: April 07, 2007, 01:26:00 PM »
A while back I noticed cracks in the glass on my limbs.  They were on the surface that contacts the limb pad of the riser.  They started at the bolt holes and the aligning pin holes and radiated in both directions.  I contacted the bowyer and he said to seal them with super glue and there should be no problem.  Those cracks since have been fine but now I have one on the other side of the limb! Starting from the limb bolt and goes in both dirctions.   The crack that goes towards the handle goes all the way to the end of the glass.  Are these limbs trashed?  What would cause this?
Thanks, Jonathan

You are probably over tightening your limb bolts. Thats really the only thing that usually causes cracks like that. Your bolts just need to be snug, not tightened as tight as they will go.

Jon;
     The Problem actually occurs because the Bowyer's Wood cores between the fiberglass were too dry and over time have absorbed moisture, buckled beneath the glass andcauses the fiberglass to crack, this problem actually has very little to do with over tightening of the limb bolts as long as you have the bezels under your lomb bolts to spread the pressure. Depending on the age of the Bow and if it is still under warranty, to me would dictate what the bowyers obligations are!!! the super glue fix will work and probably stop the cracks in the glass frm continuing up the limb, however it is not pretty cosmetically!! If under warranty ( IMHO ) the bowyer shoulds at least cover the cracks with a matching piece of thin wood veneer or fiberglass and taper it into the limb at his time and expense!!! Again this is only my opinion others may have a different view point!  Good Luck.
