For a longbow, I’d agree with those above that suggest a used Shrew. For a recurve, I’d recommend a used Predator. They make a 58” bow, but most will be 60”. If you purchase either of these used, and don’t like them, you can normally sell them for what you paid.

Uh oh... If I had 500 dollars, I'd still be off for about 2000 dollars for a true hornbow.

TradTech Black Onyx ILF riser (280.00) with TradTech Black Max wood/glass limbs (130.00). Short limbs would make a 56" bow and medium limbs would make a 58" bow.
Brand new, no wait, and endless limb choices in both recurve and longbow. Adjustable weight and tiller too.

If you're set on a new bow, Jason Kendall's Kanati would be hard to beat for a short "hybrid" style. There are several other good bows in that range, tho.

Well, as you see, no one will give you an answer that you can take to the bank. Matter of fact...they can't; too many dynamics involved in the archery game...fit, shooting characteristics, etc.
Try to find a place to shoot some.
Better looking doesn't alway fit better Mojostick. And, by your handle, one can't expect you to be objective 8^).

George,
JD custom fit my bows to exactly what I wanted. I went to his shop and he "custom fit" everything.
The original post only asked what we'd buy for $500.
