If you're buying your first bow, I'd definitely recommend getting a couple of used bows and see in what direction your interest lies. In the 4 years I've been shooting, I've probably bought and sold 20 bows. Overall, I think I'm actually a couple of bucks ahead, but if it cost me a few, that would be OK too. I have a pretty good idea now what I want to own.
I will have at least one "D" type longbow and it will probably be a Mohawk Sparrowhawk 2-piece.
No way will I part with my Lost Creek r/d longbow.
And the one bow I won't even consider selling is the first bow I ever bought. I got a recurve, 60" 50# @ 28 from a local, relatively unknown maker. This bow by Kevin Cramer is physically the lightest bow on my rack. It draws smoother than any of my other bows, and is a real joy to shoot. I would get very little for it if I sold it as the maker did not mark it, but even if someone offered me $500 for it, I'd say "No" because I don't think I could replace it, even used, for that price.
I'd say do some shooting with a variety of used, but "good" bows that you think you might like. Try everyone's bow that you can get your hands on. . Then, when you have a good idea of what you really want, sell a couple of bows, put that money down on your "dream" bow and be happy until you find the next one you absolutely have to have
