Bad luck
« on: November 04, 2009, 11:43:00 AM »
I have been having some bad luck bowhunting this season, i made what I thought was a good hit on a doe only to loose her. I called in several deer only to be spotted trying to draw. Don't get me wrong except for the doe I was having a good time but just a little frustrating. Tue. AM I saw no deer at all so I got in the stand a little early on Tues. afternoon thinking I might catch one moving mid day. I saw nothing until about ten to five in the afternoon. I called in a small buck. I have been having back trouble so it has been tough to get comfortable in my stand, i sit a while then stand a while well you get the picture. I always wear a safety harness it only makes good sense. This little buck slowly make his way to my stand, the trouble with this stand is that there is enough cover around it that you have to wait for the deer to get real close and yes there is such a thing as too close. The buck is at around eight yards and looking right at me, I am wearing plaid but he doesn't see me, he relaxes and begins to move giving me a real nice angle except for the fact that he is so close. I come to full draw anchor pick my spot and release, it is then I hear the most gawd awful noise, things happen so fast that it's hard to figure out what you see or don't see. What I do know is that the deer is hit what looks to be in a good spot. I wait till just about dark get down find some blood and put a ribbon on the spot and go home.

Chin up Jim.  Sun can't shine every day.  Things will work out.

The noise that I heard was my bow string catching the buckle on my harness, I have never had a problem with this in the past, but I'm thinking it is my almost constant having to sit and stand because of my back. Now I'm really doubting the hit, my concentration was great for the shot but I couldn't guess that my buckle would cause such a problem. I wait four hours and then get my lantern and go look. About 250 yards from the stand I find it's bed and tracks of a running deer, I'm sure I jumped it so I back out and go back home. Not a lot of sleep thinking that my hit might not be good. After it's good and light I head back to were I marked the trail.

I had what sounds like the same shot a couple of years back.  Jason was in another stand a couple hundred yards away and thought I'd broke may bow.  Sounded like I hit a 2x4 with a hammer.

Turned out I'd punched the top of the heart and hit the sternum and punched through.  Deer went about 50 yds and piled up.

I take back up on the blood trail, I have little trouble following it , I was shooting a four blade black-diamond head, those little bleeders really do the trick. I go about another 150 yards and there he is dead, what a relief. Not a huge deer but I don't trophy hunt, I take what I'm offered, the shot was good in behind the ribs in the paunch but it came out low behind the front shoulder, I caught one lung. They can go a ways on a one lung hit, the arrow stayed in the deer for a long time I found half, 100 yards from the deer and the other about ten feet from it, I'm just glad it worked out.

Good for you!  You've got better luck than I do...
Dave

I've come to believe that the keys to shooting well for me are good form, trusting the bow to do all the work, and having the confidence in the bow and myself to remain motionless and relaxed at release until the arrow hits the mark.

Now you will have to wonder if the only way you will ever hit a deer: is to bounce the string off your safety harness when you shoot.     :campfire:   :

PS, that is why I always wear my harness under my camo/outer layer. Glad it worked out man.
