Will my setup penetrate well?
« on: November 06, 2009, 02:10:00 PM »
Hello,
I've never connected with a deer using my recurve. I have a 1958 60" 52# Bear kodiak. My draw is 27" and I'm holding 50.5#'s. My arrow has a total weight of 665 grains. It's an ash arrow with a 190 grain Abowyer brown bear head. (I added lead to the 175grn) The head is 1 1/8" cut at 2 5/8" long. It is hair popping sharp. I don't know what my speed is. What would you all think is the max range for this setup on deer to get good penetration? Given of course the shot is placed well. I can keep a 3.5" group or tighter out to 28yds almost all the time. I just don't want to take an accurate shot and not have penetration when the arrow gets there. Thanks everyone!!!

That's a great set up and I'd expect pass throughs to be the norm...easily.

Zradix...Are you kidding?
You will not have a penetration problem at any distance...just as long as your arrow hits the deer before it hits the ground.

No I'm really not kidding. I've done the book work, but I have NO experience in the real world with this kind of archery. I've gone from an 80# speed demon wheel bow to this.....HAHA They do drop like a brick though. Always scary shooting indoors watching your arrow fly higher than the target while it's on its way.   :scared:

You absolutely have enough. As with most any trad bow, I just would not crowd the shoulder too much.

If you keep your shots in your comfort zone you will have no problems at all. You may have to keep tuoching up your knife after all the feild dressing, but as far as your set up, your good to go.....sounds perfct to me!!!

Having to touch up my dressing knife would be a dream come true!!

You have more than enuf, momentum wise.  As long as your arrow flight is good, you will have no issues.  Arrow flight trumps everything else in penetration, IMO.

I agree. No reason to nit pick everything else if your arrow is losing 1/4 of it's energy flying sideways! My arrows fly straight and true if I do my part. Bare shaft tested at 25yds...good groups.

I wouldn't have any hesitation hunting moose with that setup, let alone whitetails.

Well, It sounds like I shouldn't have any problems as long as I do my part. I just needed some reassurement I guess. I like to have full confidence in my equipment. Just less to worry about when the time finally comes. Thanks everyone!

As the others have said,Your set-up will work just fine!!!!!

The other side of the coin is.....

(BTW,I like to watch hunting shows regardless of the equipment)

I have watched (on TV) MANY deer run off after being shot with "speed demon 80# wheelie bows" with half of the arrow sticking out of them. This I tend to believe,is due to VERY light weight arrows and "iffy" broadheads. If you puncture both lungs with "half arrow" penetration, the only differance is an extra bleeding hole.(which IS a good thing BTW but not necessary)

Your set-up is just as efficiant as any compound, GOOD LUCK!!!!!
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

There is a fine line between Hunting, & Sitting there looking Stupid...

May The Great Spirit Guide Your Arrows..... Happy Hunting!!!

Zradix, our forefathers put in a lot of work to prove that bows were efficient for killing big game.  Some of them were doing that with 50# lemonwood longbows, and there were ladies back then killing deer with 35# lemonwood longbows, so I think you're good.

That 80# compound won't kill them any more dead than the setup you have.  Go to it.
