Cured Turkey Trouble With My Longbow
« on: November 06, 2009, 08:45:00 PM »
Took advantage of an opportunity that presented itself tonight. I was about 15 feet up a tree and about 50 turkeys were scratching and making all kinds of ruckus out in front of me. A group of 5 finally moved to within 15 yards and I was able to move verwy, verwy, sloowwllyy and get a shot off on the biggest hen in range. Broke the wing going in and must've heart shot it because it flopped about 5 feet and died. I 12 ringed the big hen! Lucky shot! Can't hit a big deer in the vitals at that range, but I can kill the wariest animal in the woods - doesn't make any sense to me. Anyway, the turkeys were making so much ruckus I didn't even hear or see two nice mature does sneak in on me. After I shot the turkey they ran off a little. Didn't spook but they didn't like the commotion and wouldn't come near me. The turkey died right in the trail I was watching and don't you know 3 more nice freezer specimens show up and wouldn't come into my shooting lane because there was a dead turkey blocking their way. Oh well, really proud of the turkey and the lucky shot!

I was wondering when your first post would show up(of the season)...Congrats on the bird. I managed to scare one really well a few days ago!

Nice shot.

Thanks everyone!  I forgot to add that I was shooting a TimberHawk Falcon Takedown Longbow at 66#s, Easton Legacy arrow tipped with a Rothhaar Snuffer.

Jamie, I've been a little picky lately. Had a button buck try to commit suicide this morning. He was 3 ft from the base of my tree and then finally wandered off. About 15 minutes later he came back and I grunted to see what he'd do. He just stood there until a coyote came charging in and ran him off. Tried to squeak to stop the coyote for a shot but it came out more like a sick guinea pig. I hunted Indiana and had a doe just about pull me out of my treestand when it got tangled in my pull rope. Saw 5 P&Y caliber bucks and had one just on the edge of my range at 25 yards, but he stayed in some brush. I'm now on a meat quest and any NY deer 1.5 or older is fair game. Had a devil buck at about 30 yards yesterday. Saw a really nice buck standing guard over a doe bedding in an open pasture. They are getting frisky. Tomorrow morning should be awesome. Heading back to Indiana on Thursday next week. Good luck everyone!

Good job!!!

Just curious, is that all the penetration you got?  I've only shot one turkey with my bow and it was from the ground so I expected my arrow to zip right through but it didn't.  About half an arrow out each side.  I always hear guys wanting to shoot a head that won't blow through a turkey but it seems like when you see pictures of bow killed turkeys or video, partial penetration is the norm.
Dave

I've come to believe that the keys to shooting well for me are good form, trusting the bow to do all the work, and having the confidence in the bow and myself to remain motionless and relaxed at release until the arrow hits the mark.
