My bow died. What do you guys suggest?
« on: November 13, 2009, 04:21:00 PM »
Upon sitting in my treestand tonight I noticed a crack in my Kempfs handle. I immediately left the woods came home and unstrung the bow. It sucks big time but ive been thinking about getting a new take down for a while guess im going to have to now. Im hoping I can get another bow before NYs season ends.

My price range is about $300 right now since this was so sudden ive been checking out the Samick bow line but would really like to get my hands on a 50lb Hoyt Gamemaster. Any input or suggestions would be much appreciated. Now I think im going to go cry lol.

I had a Greatree Volcano.  Price tag is low and the bow was a nice shooter.  I put a deer down with it before selling it to purchase something else.  Another option would be an instock Checkmate Falcon.  Only problem, neither are takedown's.

crack in the riser?

for the very most part, totally fixable - probably easier than you think, too.

if it's hairline crack, wick in some quality water thin cya (any brand sold at a hobby shop).

If you need a bow to finish the season let me know. I got something you could shoot,I'm sure! I'm leaving on a hunting trip late Sat. let me know.

Heres a photo I got. Only thing I can think of it must have cracked worse today or something because I havent noticed until today. As you can see it goes up through some of the shelf.

It looks like a glue line has failed in the riser laminations.
Give Jack a ring, but I'm guessing he'll just run some this CA glue in there (as Rob suggested) & refinish the riser.
With a little patience& common sense, you can do it yourself.
If that's the extent of the crack, I really wouldn't worry about it too much. I had the same exact problem with one of my bows & the bowyer told me not to worry about it (Big name bowyer, PM me if you want to know who) it shouldn't affect the bow at all.

Jack would probably glue it then shoot it for a couple of days. Failing that he can cutout the affected area and put a saddle through the grip and shelf.

Since the crack runs along the lamination line and not across the grain, I would say it's very fixable.

God forbid I talk a guy outa buying a bow, but if you were to contact Jack, He may have a riser he could loan you while he takes a look at yours. Agree with the boys, it looks like the glue gave up in the lam. I would vote to fix it and get through the saeson. Good luck and good hunting.

Super glue it ( not the gel super glue the runny one) then clamp it over night and wrap the handle with sinew from 3rivers or who ever will work and after the season send it to Jack.

It's faaarrr from lost.  I've fixed a lot with thin CA (superglue) and they are perfect three years later.  The riser wood is sorta finding its' natual position and you need to support the gaps with CA. It cures as a sort of clear plastic.  I talked a length with Mike Fedora about this and he says the same thing.  Sometimes wood "checks" or glue joints are soo stressed that they have to "give" a little.  We just fill the empty spaces and hope for the best.  It's kinda like havin' kids, you're never really ready, you just do it and bail water when it fills the hull. Hang in there, whatta ya got to loose?  Steve

Kwick-It brand CYA is pretty good stuff and available at lots of hobby/craft stores.  Red is their thin stuff.

An easy fix. I would try to use a good two part epoxy get the runny kind not the gel and try using a hypodermic needle to get it in the crack. You can get one at most livestock supply houses. I had a schafer that did the same thing, it's still shootin'.
