BEN

Hey gang,
Went out tonight hoping to head off a 10pt. buck I had seen in my woods, but the wind started really messing around, so I bailed out of my tree-stand and decided to head for my brush blind with better winds; a spot better for does, but with the rut in full swing--you just never know!

Anyhow, as I was arriving, a small group of turkeys was leaving and so I get settled in and wonder what he chances are of much else moving since the temps. were in the mid 60's.

About 4:30, I hear cackling and yelping getting closer and louder and I decided a chance at a turkey would be a good consolation prize. A good flock showed up, 20+, and I started getting all kinds of hopes up.......slowly the birds got close as I eased into a good kneeling position. Seeing all these birds up close and personal was awesome!!! I decided I wanted a bearded bird so I started ignoring the hens.....several jakes were in the group, but a very large hen caught my eye...should I just take the fat one??    nah!! I'll wait......then a nice tom jumped up on a stump. I decided he was the one I wanted!! He was constantly moving and bobbing around...I drew up once and thought he pegged me but he looked briefly and went back to scratching around. Finally he held still and a glint of sunight made a nice little spot on his shoulder, and  >>>----------> THUD!!! my 610 gr. arrow drove him sideways and up he jumped just to land over on his head   :archer:
Amazingly, only 1/2 the flock left in a hurry. the rest just stood around looking at the dead turkey and some just eating. Finally the rest walked off.

I waited about a 1/2 hour, hoping a deer would walk by, but I couldn't take it any longer----I had to get my bird and get some pictures while I still had light!!

Guess what we're having on Thanskgiving???

3 seperate parts, i believe there was a diagram on here somewhere. its a little messy seperating them and scraping them down but it makes a great call and token from your bird. i have a couple good books on wingbone call making i could send you or if you can seperate the bones and send them to me i will make you one. i'll look on the net and see if i can find a diagram to send you.

Ben, appreciate the words! No luck yet. The late season starts up for me again on the 21st. I'll be out there with my new PLX and Safari Tuff quiver giving it my best shot! Hope you get to fill your freezer also.

Congrats! I too broke my jinx on turkeys this year and will be enjoying an extra special Thanksgiving. I had to smile when I read that you went out to hunt deer and ended up with a turkey. I went out this afternoon to hunt turkeys and came home with a rutting buck that couldn't resist a pair of soft bleat calls.

Ben,  Great shot!!!  Only a bow as quiet as yours could shoot a turkey out of a flock and not scare the rest away.

Nice Ben. Save the wing bones before you cook them and make a yelper.
