2009 Texas Hunt
« on: November 16, 2009, 08:58:00 PM »
My hunt began at Solana Ranch in Solado,Texas. A more game rich envioremnet does not exist. A beautiful large low fence operation just covered up in deer and wild hogs. There were only three hunters there on the dates I had booked, myself and two other hunters from Mississippi. I was there 4-8 Nov.

The first night I was placed at a ladderstand in among some oak trees and I settled in and awaited. Not long after getting settled, a sonde of pigs came in, the smaller ones were milling around but this blue color sow would not come in any closer than 30 yards, she is the one I wanted so when presented with a shot I took it and the 300 extreme did its job, I do not normally shoot at game that far out but the shot just felt right so I took it and am glad I did. Here she is

Now, the next 3 days were filled with close calls but for one reason or another the shot just did not materealize.

On the second morning I was at another big oak tree but no game was sighted within shooting distance, one nice 8 point at 45 yards.

That afternoon in yet another ladder stand I had a small 4 point and a six point as well as a wide 8 but his tines were very short, I would have taken him but no shot was presented.

The third morning was the best of all, matter of fact that day was special. The bucks were chasing hard and I watched 5 or 6 differ3nt very nice bucks chasing does in front of me a very nice show indeed.About 9:00 am a does is heading for me and a beautiful chocolate horded ten point was right behind her. Now the guided and Terry Green all warned me to aim below the deer at this place as they would duck an arrow in a heartbeat so I could hear those words in my brain when the ten point stopped broadside at 10 yards. I shoot at one of the only deer on the entire ranch who did not read the script, yep, he just stood there and let me shoot under him. I was heartbroken, if I would of just shot for the heart he would of been mine.

That night at a different stand, 8 or 10 tom turkeys came in to my set and like an idiot I decided to do a head shot instead of just putting the arrow where it needed to go, yep missed him and as you know, no second chances.
Then I watched a huge 8 come towards me from at least 600 yards across the pasture, he entered a tree line and I waited. Right at last shooting light he made it to me and all I could see was his head at 15 yards, he needed to take two more steps, at that point I noticed a sounder of at least 20 pigs headed my way. Come on deer, one more step,He jerks his head up and looks at the pigs 30 yards out and takes off at mach one. I was livid, so mad I could not even shoot at the pigs.
Last morning I had a small doe and a 4 point, now I wanted some vinison but the doe was a yearling and the 4 point was presentin a shot, again I hear Terry telling me to aim low, I shoot and again this deer just stands there and lets my arrow go in the dirt below him, laughs at me and is gone.

Now as I said this is a great place and you need to go there if you get the chance, you will not be sorry, we were fed like kings, chili, briskit, steak, you name it we ate it and a full breakfast every morning after the hunt.

My next hunt was with my brother down in Freer Texas hunting with my friend Glenn Smith.

Boy was it hot, plus with a half year of rain in Sept all the browse was green, not your normal scenerio in deep South Texas. We hunted hard for 3 days,Nov 12-16 but no game was taken the deer and pigs were not moving in daylight,on the last day I had some Javalina come in but something spooked them before I chould shoot, such was my luck but I had a blast with my brother, my friend Smitty and another friend Eric Zuniga.

Still in Texas but no other opertunities to hunt so will be visiting family until I depart back to Guam on the 30th.

Congrats on the pig!  I live in Georgetown which is about 15 minutes south of Salado and the Solana ranch, and I sure wish I would have known there were some fellow tradgangers in my stomping grounds!  Very fond of the bow as well.

We did have a great hunt. It was very hot and game movement was nearly nonexistant. The first morn I saw a doe and two yearlings, but doe never came in closer than 50 yards. Yearlings at 10 yards, but because of the drought, and only a 9% fawn survival rate they were off limits. Then 26 turkeys, but could not make one grow a beard. LOL. That evening, sat the same stand, but nothing came in. Next morning sat a different spot, only dove, quail, caracaras, and green jays. Good show by all. That evening I again sat the same stand, and two does came in, but went behind me to water and offered no shots.

The last morning I sat the same stand hoping the does would come back. One did come in, but I think she was on crack. Never saw a doe so jumpy. It took her a good 10 min to settle down and get broadside at 10 yards. I began my draw and she threw her head up looking south of me and did a 180 and took of like a jet fighter. I never did see what spooked her. Another great sit though,

Last evening I sat a diffenrent stand, but nothing came in. Just another bird show. I had a great hunt, even though we did not kill anything. We enjoyed some great food Kimber prpared for us and great fellowship with a great bunch of men. Eric did get a shot at a big Tom bobcat, but missed. I will definately be going back to hunt with Smitty again.

Here are some pics of scenes from a blind. Nice shooting lanes and you are hidden real good. Comfy chairs.

Danny, I had the same thing happen in Africa with Impala.  The first 2 I shot right under because they just stood there.  One was a rare for South Africa and very beautiful Black Faced Impala!   :banghead:  When The third shot presented itself I just shot at it like I would/did everything else and I was rewarded with a beautiful trophy.
