I was raised by a pack of wild dachshunds- so I am a bit prejudiced.
I have German wirehairs now; and I have used them for tracking bears. If your thinking about a big dog for tracking on lead; be ready for hitting branches; getting dragged through bogs; and streams; and ..well many times I have wanted a dog I could easily control in times when the dog is really into the sniff; and those dachshunds look like the perfect answer !!!

Brian, They still take you into branches, bogs, and streams...except they don't drag you
But if you take too much time to mark blood sign they can come back & bite you in the leg to get ya going. Oh and when they do find THEIR deer, bear, or whatever...it is theirs for a little while

Three of my friends use the Yak or Jag Terrier for tracking. All are a member of Deer Search here in NY. They all got the dogs after a buck I shot in Il. was recovered with one. Years ago I used deer search here in NY and the tracker came with Dachshund.

Bill Kissner from Illinois was at Bear Quest this past spring. I think his Jagdterrier found four bears! They are cute little buggars too! Doc

Does Anyone know if Illinois allows the use of tracking dogs?

Thanks for posting the pic of Suzy Jeff. She is like most trackers, when she finds an animal, it is hers alone for a while. Several times she has actually grabbed me or the hunter by the britches leg when we started to drag "her" deer out of the woods.
Burnsie, yes blood trailing deer is now legal in Illinois and has been for 5 or 6 years.

My brother-in-law has a Golden Retriever that finds the deer, and holds it if it's still alive until he gets there to finish it off! No leash- the dog barks when he's found the deer, but not before.

Great looking dogs!!! I love the wire haired variety.
I've been around wire haired dachsunds, jagd terriers, and jack russel's for tracking. All were pretty good, but I love the look of a scruffy dachsund.
