Yeaa haaaaw!

Showed up today!  Barely started reading it.  So far just the forward and stuff but I know it's gonna be a good read.

Thanks Gene.

By the way, kudos for dedicating it to the armed forces.

I've come to believe that the keys to shooting well for me are good form, trusting the bow to do all the work, and having the confidence in the bow and myself to remain motionless and relaxed at release until the arrow hits the mark.

My favorite books about whitetail hunting. This one coupled with Come November are by far the two best books ever written for the serious whitetailer. Jumping around alot right now. What exactly is he calling a "header". Is this the highest point of a drainage or highest area of a ridge? I probably missed how he uses the term since I've been jumping around! Thanks Gene for giving of your knowledge.

Got two packages in the mail yesterday:  Gene's new book and a new Dale Dye (new to me).  Yes, I did unpack the Dale Dye first (I was like a kid on Christmas morning), but I spent most of the evening reading the new book.  I had to force myself to put it down and get to bed.  Hard to go to sleep thinking about some of Gene's new ideas....the man really makes sense.  I'm sure the book will eventually get tattered pages from being read and re-read.

Yes, yesterday was like Christmas!

Ya I was wondering about what is meant by a header..I'm guessing where the ridge or drainage begins?

Gene left for the timber again this morning so I'll answer the header question. What we usually refer to as a "header" is the top of a washout (wet or dry) where water has eroded out the ridge side. In otherwords, when you have a ridge, because of the terrain, running water (either from rain or an underground seepage) washes out a slight drainage on the side of the hill. This washout creates a slight obstacle for deer walking across the hillside. Yes, they can cross it wherever they want, but it's a lot easier for them to loop around the top of the seepage rather than having to cross it. The top of the header creates a pinch-point of deer movement. BW

Have had my copy for a few days.  Great reading.  It is awesome that men with so much knowledge on hunting whitetails are so willing to share.  For me, I have been on my own learning this world of deer.  A lot of trial an error.  My poor husband has to be so sick of moving my stands!  He is a great man and does it with a smile everytime:)
I do not know many other deer bow hunters.  At least ones that share the same hunting values that I do.  I relish the chance to get inside info from someone who has already come up the ranks.  It almost feels like cheating!  I was in my stand yesterday thinking of what tress to drop as to funnel the deer to me.  What time of the year I will clear my trails with weed killer.  Watching the wind move the trees.  Wondering where my sent is lifting and falling.  Love it.  This book has opened up a whole new area of hunting whitetail for me.  Thanks to Gene for his willingness to share with us youngins in the sport.

You know, speaking of 'headers', I've always caught on to Gene and Barry kind of inventing words they need along the way.  It may have been back in their 'The Horse You Rode In On' book, but they were talking about quilted toilet paper having more "gription."   :)   Well, I was leafing through an industrial/custodial catalog the other day and saw where there is actually a company either called "Gription" or producing gloves by the same name.  Wonder if the boys got a royalty from that or had been borrowing it all along.  Had to laugh.

Another way to describe his headers might be that you have a valley down below, but several usually dry 'tributaries' (valleys/dry creeks/etc.) that feed down into that dominant valley/creek at the bottom.

OK, so Barry's explained what they mean by a "header", now would he explain what the heck a "crick" is??  They talk about them all the time . . . I figured it was some kind of term they used when they were practicing chiropractors, you know, when you describe a tight or painful muscle in your neck, it is a "crick.":^)

Humorist Patrick McManus explained it best. A "creek" is a small, clear, free-flowing body of water suitable for trout fishing, skinny dipping, etc. A "crick" is a creek after it has been visited by cattle. Sounds like Gene must be hunting a small body of water frequented by cattle.

You know, I read quite a bit. I own perhaps/nearly every book on archery and its history back to the 19th century. I love adventure and passion in literary prose. My favorite books are from Howard Hill, Saxton Pope, Aldo Leopold, Sasha Samuel and others..not to mention ….Gene Wensel.

Gene has written his 4th (so he claims) book. It is a re-visit to his 40+ years of whitetail hunting tactics and theory. In all the years I have known gene he has always shot straight from the hip. NO BS and funny. Nothing has changed. It is bare bones no BS "Whitetail Wonderama" at it's best! Got it yesterday in the nmail .. taking it with me on my Wisocnsin hunt next week.

His first book 1984’s “Hunting Rutting Whitetails” was a groundbreaking piece that turned whitetail hunting on its ear with regard to hunting the rut.

This book is destined to be a classic like his last three. I encourage all of you to get a copy for your den.
