How do you know where to put the serving on a string if you don't have the bow. Thanks

I make a mark at the center of the string and mark 3-3 1/2" towards the top loop and 4-4 1/2" towards the bottom loop. Hope this helps.

When I serve a string without the bow,I'll mark the center and go down 3" toward the bottom loop and then up 4" toward the top loop.This works for me.
