Yes - a nice buck in gun season- with a bow
« on: November 28, 2009, 10:08:00 AM »
I have been hunting with a bow in gun season the last 10-12 years and have done fairly well. I spotted this buck 2 different times headed back into a honeysuckle thicket to bed down a couple of weeks before our firearms season opened. But I didn't have a buck tag left for archery season left as I had used them previously and was hunting antlerless deer . But as firarms season opened the state gives you additional tags( for a fee )and 1 of them is a buck tag . I had around 50-80 turkeys all over the mountain I was hunting that morning , they turned over just about every leave within earshot . I could not hear anything but turkey talk and scratching. The turkeys would not come anywhere near me possibly due to the hunter orange. About 9AM I saw the buck coming through the sunlight at about 80 yards on a trail that would lead him past me at about 10 yards . When he was 35 yards and coming he smelled something on the ground and wheeled around to investigate it, my chin dropped to the stand I'm sure.He then turned back towards me and proceeded on the trail  . When he came into an opening at 11 yards I shot . At the shot it looked a little high , he ran 65 yards and stopped between 2 trees. I grabbed my binos and could see a blood spot the size of a volleyball right where it needed to be high and tight to the sholder. He swayed twice then rolled down the hill.I have to admit after the shot I was tore up like a dish rag .  Green score 132 5/8" if you are into that. My best buck ever !

I seek out places that are populated to hunt during gun season that do not allow firearms hunting , this was in one of them . Only heard 2 shots that morning a 1/2 mile away.
